I'd have to guess that that means "What's going on" but it's only a guess.

ps. Out of those caving excursions I liked the 4 hour abseil and cave walk.

Funko, Noisy you owe me roughly £40 for that internal flight. Kiwi bastards added on another tenner in tax! (Not including any extra charges at this end for the conversion...) btw, noiseman the checkin for that flight is at least 20mins not 2 hours.

Thought so for an internal flight.

OK, we'll miss out Taupo then for more time at the rest. I've had a recommendation for tea and scones at the Cricket Pavilion in Rotorua - which you take in the bath!!!

Also, apparently Dunedin's a dump but has some sort of wildlife reserve, and we would need to book a motel before going there, but Invercargill on the South coast is really nice ... but would add a few hundred miles on the journey. Too much to do ... so little time.

We can still use Taupo to break the journey to Waikomo.

That makes $468.48 (£141.96) for the Brits and $229.22 for Venom.

Tomorrow, I'll check out company discount.

Are you sure about those car hire prices? I can understand the one way ones, but even the Chch one seems a bit steep!!! I'll see if I can remember the hire car company we used on the Sth Island - I'm almost certain it was only about NZ$25 a day...

Check THIS out!

Special offer of NZ$25 a day during August...

(That example isn't unlimited kms, so not brilliant - but the point is you shouldn't be paying more than S100 a day like your quotes!)

BTW Taupo from Rotorua is only about 1.5 hrs IIRC, makes sense as a day trip from Taupo - but no sense on a journey to Waitomo...

Kia Ora!

See this though:

"each km will cost you 25 cents"

As we're doing 1500+ miles which is 2400km that adds an extra $600 to the price. Still cheaper but wonder if there are other hidden costs?

What about Taupo on the way from Wellington to Waitomo to break the journey?

That is only the first example I picked - the point is that we had a fairly largish car (Mazda 626?) for only about $25 a day with unlimited kms - the only scary thing was the $750 excess...

IIRC the 'expensive' options were running at about $50 a day, you should be able to make a decent saving on your current quote...

Taupo is slap bang on the road to Rotorua from Wgtn - I would suggest an early start from Wgtn and arriving in Taupo about lunchtime. There are loads of attractions along the road from Taupo to Rotorua - knocking them off on the way would be best...

It'd be best for us to go from Wellington to Waitomo because we need to go to Rotorua last because that's where our plane south is on the 19th.

Those were three individual quotes, so if I talk to them direct and get a combination deal it may get better. Also, there were a bunch of surcharges for pick-ups/drop-offs at terminals, and taxes. Hertz would probably be expected to be dear, anyway. I've also had 'Kiwi' cars recommended.

We need a big car for the last stretch, because we'll be towing Venom in the horse-box, along with his 'fridge and satellite TV set-up.

Yeah, Waitomo is a bit out of the way...

If you do Taupo, it's best to do en route - that way you travel the least distance. Thing is, most of the good stuff is on the road from Taupo to Rotorua.

You could use Rotorua as a base and 'do' Waitomo as a day trip. A couple of hours there and a couple back with, say 4 hours in the caves. IIRC there is bugger all there apart from the caves anyway (this was 7yrs ago!).

BTW about 1/2 way between Wgtn and Taupo is a cool refreshment stop at a place called Mangaweka. It is a cafe inside a DC3 on stilts!

Fancy rafting over a 7m waterfall? You can do the grade 5 Kaituna river for about NZ$70...

I've got the cash and TCs.

I've got the soluble aspirin (enough for all) and travel socks (that you're NOT sharing) to guard against DVT.

I've got another four books from the W.H. Smith promotion: 'Fallen Dragon' - Hamilton, and the three books of the 'Manifold' series by Steven Baxter.

I've got a new pair of swimming trunks so I don't embarrass myself in the thermal baths. I've got a security wallet; new walking socks; couple of water bottles; compression straps.

I've got the jitters because I haven't started packing yet.

I've got to check on travel insurance and book the car hire.

I've got to arrange for travel to and from Heathrow. (Might be able to scrounge a lift this Saturday.)

Are we taking sleeping bags? Seems a bit excessive to me, unless we are going to use hostels which don't supply bedclothes.

What have I forgotten?

I haven't got any travel socks. Hmmm.

I haven't got any books.

I've got a new pair of swimming trunks so I don't embarrass myself in the thermal baths. I've got a security wallet; new walking socks; couple of water bottles; compression straps.

I haven't got any swimming trunks.

I've got the jitters because I haven't started packing yet.

I have packed about half my stuff.

I've got to check on travel insurance and book the car hire.

Er... not much time left!

I've got to arrange for travel to and from Heathrow. (Might be able to scrounge a lift this Saturday.)

A friend of mine is also travelling to LA on saturday afternoon. We're getting the Heathrow Rail-Air Coach together from Reading station. Takes 25 mins if the roads are clear. Not sure when we'll be leaving.

Are we taking sleeping bags? Seems a bit excessive to me, unless we are going to use hostels which don't supply bedclothes.

I have packed one. Be useful for staying at Rach and Ned's if nothing else and it's handy to have for emergencies.

What have I forgotten?

No sharp objects in hand luggage? Wallet/creditcards/money? Passport? Tickets? Anything else is a bonus.

DVT

People most at risk are those who are:

- Elderly
- Overweight
- Smokers
or have
- had recent surgery or serious illness
- had a DVT in the past or a family history of DVT
- congenital blood clotting abnormalities
- a heart condition or a cancer, or
- are pregnant or on oral contraceptives.
Since you are an old fat git who smokes 40 cigarettes/day and is fond of oral contraceptives I think you should pay attention, Funko.

Mobiles in NZ. Prices for PAYG phones from NZ telecom look about $349 for the cheapest one (very quick search, not sure if that's really the cheapest, didn't see any Nokias)

Vodafone NZ site is down at the moment.

That's about £100, probably be cheaper to make the few calls we need using a international roaming UK phone I would have thought...

Just walk into someplace and ask to use the phone. If they complain about long distance, tell them it will be a 2 minute call and you'll pay them a couple of bucks for their troubles.

Smaller car rental agencies tend not to have airport sites, but may have transfer arrangements. Also, they don't have drop-offs at Rotorua as a cost-free option. (Auto Rentals - $100 fee.)

Funko - do you have the NZ YHA site URL to check on bedclothes availability?
