I was going to be pedantic and say that breathing was needed as well, but that of course is necessarily included as part of the mechanism to resonate the vocal chords. Clever Venom, in encompassing two processes (breathing and control of the vocal chords) in such a terse phrase.

Of course, aspirants and sibilants don't require the vocal chords, but we'll just skip over that.

Rachel says we're "nutz" and Shiny says we shouldn't bother going to see the North Island at all. Although if we have to we're going to the best bits.

I might be skiing in the North Island around the end of August beginning of September...

Wish I'd known earlier...

What do you guys want to see etc, I could recommend an itinerary...?

I think a car is the way to go, they were very cheap to hire in NZ and it's the best way to see the country. I have done numerous driving tour of the place, north and south.

One thing to note - there are plenty of backpackers type hostels up and down the country, but in NZ they are small and well appointed. You can get away with a bed for only a few dollars.

The South Island temps are going to be pretty cold indeed...

Well... we want to see Milford Sound, Nav wants to spend some time in Wellington, we wanted to see some of the North Island as well. Noisy also wanted to go to Queenstown. The problem is they are all so damn far apart.

We have to be in C'church on the 20th to pick up Venom and get to Tekapo on the 24th for the wedding the next day.

Well, I just need to pop out shortly for a while but...

Noisy's plan is certainly doable - it's just gonna be hard on the driver! Especially if he's the only one after travelling round the World (Jetlag!)

Internal flights are pretty cheap in NZ, you might be able to fly direct from Chch to Rotorua, hire a car for a few days and take in Taupo and Waitomo too. Fly from Rotorua to Wgtn (walk/use public transport), take the ferry to Picton as foot passengers and hire the car from there.

I don't know how much the flights will cost BUT you will save at least a whole days driving EACH WAY (save on rental/petrol), plus save on not taking the car on the ferry etc...

Just an idea?

It will cost more, but then this is one of those holidays of a lifetime...

12 Arrive C'church 06:50 - spend day with Rachel and Ned
13 Fly to Rotorua, get car, stay in Rotorua. Stuff to do: Day - Zorbing, Mount Ngongotaha (sp?) for Luging etc, Agrodome (For Mike - lots of SHEEP!), Kaituna White Water Rafting (going over a 22ft waterfall anyone? Loads of Thermal parks like Waiotapu, Orakei-Korako, Waimangu (these are on their way to Taupo). Night - Drinking, Polynesian Pools. At least one of the hostels has a large open air hot pool with a bar!
14 To Taupo, no desperate reason to stay there the night. Huka Falls, Shrimp Farm (Yummy! Also Golf if you're sadistic against Shrimp!), Huka Jet, Rapid Jet (goes up the rapids), Bungy - all these things are along the main road just N of Taupo. Taupo lake at sunset is amazing too!
15 To Waitomo, about an hour and a bits drive, nothing there except the amazing caves - you can abseil in, do blackwater rafting or just a leisurely boat trip amongst the glow worms!
16 Fly to Wgtn in morning. CHILL! Take in the cafes, bars, pool halls, take a Cable car to the Botanical gardens and walk back down over the motorway. Check out the Beehive, Te Papa museum etc
17 More of Wellington
18 Ferry to Picton, drive to Marlborough Wine Region, do a tour (IIRC Montana is on the main road!), Prenzell liquers is good too. Drive to Kaikoura - try and see some Whales that day, eat at Mussel Boys (fantastic green shell mussels!) or next morning...

That's if you decide to fly!

Otherwise I'd stick to the Sth Island...

19 To C'church in afternoon
20 Meet Danny at airport 08:00 - this is the tough bit, drive down to Dunedin that afternoon
21 Dunedin to Te Anau stay in Te Anau
22 Te Anau to Milford sound, back to Te Anau or stay in Milford
23 To Queenstown for hardcore extreme sports (maybe?!)
24 To Tekapo - meet everyone before wedding
25 Wedding
26 Day of leisure at Tekapo - or trip to Mt. Cook if we want
27 Inland route to C'church
28 Fly out from C'church 17:30

Has anyone told Noisy that NZ is bigger in area than the UK, and he wants to drive up and down the length and breadth of it!!?

Yeah, we checked the distances. It is a long way...

How much do the internal flights cost and what kind of availability is there? They looked expensive.

I'm not gonna do all ya work for ya!

In NZ, either you drive or you fly - the prices should be OK, relatively speaking.

Check out websites on Air New Zealand, Ansett in NZ (if they didn't go with Ansett in OZ!), FreedomAir... I think they do one way flights at a reasonable price. I think there is a direct Chch - Rotorua flight.

Remember, you should save on a day or two of a hire car, petrol, parking in Wgtn (don't need one in Wgtn), cost of ferrying the car...

16 Days including a wedding to do a whole country is very ambitious. I must commend you on completely avoiding Auckland - good move that!

Flight to Rotorua direct from C'Church leaving 7:15 am $136 each, $408 total including tax.

Via Aukland or Wellington we're looking at $300 to $600 but we could find a decent time of day to go.

link here

Going between Christchurch and Rotorua (CHC and ROT)

Rotorua to Wellington on the 16th August, leaving at 10:10 $243 each.

All prices $NZ.

We could drive up and fly back to C'church or wellington maybe?

Internal flights in New Zealand are very expensive if you don't book them early. Like 3 weeks early. You can get some good deals on Quantas for like 6:30 in the morning from time to time, but if you're going to book flights around the country, do it before you arrive - you'll save heaps.

Christchurch to Taupo $383 / £114 One-way. (Air Newzealand)

Then we could drive back as planned. That would save about 2 days?

Edit + £17 tax each.

Not really... Well, there is but it's not worth cutting time in Wellington down...

There's a train that goes out to Martinborough in the Wairarapa, which is a wine growing area - good for a day trip. Nice journey across the Rimutaka Mountains...

Yes, Freedom Air are good aren't they?
