amazing

salonica is an amazing city.

what to marvel first?

the rotunda which is the twin brother of the roman pantheon.

Just that monument building has more history than one can count, and it's not even the anciest there.

build to either be a shrine to zeus or a crematory for a roman emperor.
anyway, that emperor died and then christianity started taking hold so they said, freck it let's turn it into a christian temple and it was a splendid byzantine temple that was first an ancient greek temple!!!!!

then the ottoman frecks destroyed some of it and turned it into a mosque but now it is again turned into a christian temple so all is good.

although the archeological agency wants to turn it to a museum

anyway.

amazing.

then there's tons more

the byzanint museum. thessaloiniki was MAJOR during the byzantine empire.

you walk that museum you see the transformation of the roman empire from the dodecatheon to christianity right in front of your eyes.

mosaics, statues, marbles, golden leaves, decorations, diamonds, everything

and loooooooooooooots of icons.

plus the city is filled with protochristan churches from 4th century onward.

the frecking turks destroyed some of the beautiful mosaics so freck them, REALLY

then... eye watering the ewish holocaust museum. the nazis killed the jews there that had mileniums of history, chased by erdinant and some spanish queen, forgo the name. the city was called the second jerusalem.

and vibrant amazing bars, huge shopping streets, bands, people having a good time, polite.

and I didn't even manage to visit the macedonian archeological museum so alexander will have to wait.

and the seventh tower, an infamous prison, build by the byzantines aeons ago, only stopped being a prison in 1989 or so.

many songs written about that one.

thessaloniki ROCKS

Visiting ancient Europe would be neat if it wasn't for that fact that I'd need to be on a plane for like 6 hours to get there.

Visiting ancient Europe would be neat, except for all the dysentery.

I thought Salonica was rather dirty and run down post industrial in a rust belt sort of way. I was only there over night and this was back in 2000 but the locals were nice enough, the bars were decent without being too expensive, though the place was over run with hookers from Albania to Romania. Not even in Vegas have I had so many aggressive hookers grab my cock and proposition me. Not really a tourist oriented city but not terrible.

I honestly have no idea where you frequent when you visit those cities.
Salonica has seen an amazing expansion/betterment in the last 17 years it's true but still you'd have to go to some really shady parts of town to see what you see.

You said some similar things about Athens and I live here and I've never seen them in my life.

Tourism in Salonica is through the roof, partly because it is easily accecible from neighboring countries too (although there was a bazilion of french but they seem to be everywhere)

Likewise for New York
There are some very affordable fares to and from. I've been searching.
I also search for hotels but since I'm cheapskate I found a cheap one and on googlemaps everything adjacent was in chinese (including the hotel)
Not a bad thing?
I just don't want to rent in a ghetto. But have no idea where those are

In Greece "ghetto" means someone might give you the stare.
In New York I heard it's different

I've never been to New York, but Chicago's version of Chinatown is alright. Actual authentic food, and it's nice to walk down the streets and window shop.

There was one place that was selling a mockup of an 18th century Chinese armor for like $2600. Looked cool.

We were at a Greek military base picking up military equipment which got shipped there. Yeah, it was the old part of town and I am sure 17 years later things have improved.

Everyone is welcome to their own opinions, but I like San Francisco's better than New York's. Not so run down.

plus it's a theocracy so it's doubling down on stupid

during a festivity the crowd clapped out (it's when you clap loudly someone in order for him/her to stop talking) a representative of iran with a veil.

all the symbols of oppression there. the people wouldn't have it.
good for the people.

i guess the world is divided in two.

freedom and oppression

the iranian music was great though.

that's the good thing. cultural exchanges are great. and there are big ties between greece and iran because alexander beat xerxes. and then the iranians started calling their kids alexander (also attilla but that's a different story)

culture yes. this being hijacked by politics, no

hypocricy is a great word.

you know it as hypocricy and most people do but if we discect it

it means hypo = under
cricy = judgemend

a lesser judgement.

a weak/false judgement
