sorry, with the FPL season over I've taken a few days rest

next spring you mean 2017
who knows where will we all be in a year, and the world

Will I be home "in the spring"? well, that's a rather generic indication :P
I might be taking a traveling break for a few days or a week, but have set no plan with such a great advance and I'm not foreseeing to emigrate
I might tho decide to flee from our country, should the political situation get worse or should I commit some crime
And should I change home in the meanwhile, yes I presume I'll be home, whichever might it be then

Should you stop in or pass by Milan, it would definitely be nice to meet again.
Or should you just get in the area, a day trip to meet you could also be arranged (even as far as, say, Venice or Florence)

MoSe,
The trip to Tuscany is still in the planning stage. Any advice or recommendations. We are open to agros in the country. Planning on renting a car. I know, we're nuts.
Thanks Milan dude.

But if they bring their own car, they'll have the same problem. Can't be the reason.

Driving and parking in the hill towns and castles.

Often you can park just outside the small towns and the rest is a short walk.

Occasionally, some things in Italy are pretty well organised. It's just completely unpredictable which ones.

My grandparents actually bought a Peugeot once just because they would let you roll in a trip to France into the financing. You would fly to France, pick up your new car at the factory, spend a week or two driving around France on vacation, then they would box up your car and ship it to America while you flew home. Not a bad little service really.

On the downside you ended up owning a Peugeot.

Not really. We've been to Tuscany in 2006 or 2007, so any info would be outdated. Also depends where you want to go, how long you want to stay etc.

What has worked pretty well for us: camping areas usually offer huts or trailers for rent, so you can use them without your own tent, van etc. Some of them are also quiet close to twon centers, just have to look around a bit.

The preliminary plan is to arrive in May; a few days in Roma and in Frirnza. Then off to the wild hills of Tuscany for a week/10 days. The idea is to comfortably soak up local flavor to last a lifetime.

I only visited Tuscany after high-school (that's 35 years ago!), in a train-backpack-tent trip trhu central italy with a friend.
Stayed in florence few days with single-day trips to Siena and Arezzo
Then went to Orbetello few years later in the summer, and went back to Florence 3-4 times not as a tourist.
Never visited the Uffizi, never toured the hilltowns, never for instance the famous Volterrra and S.Gimignano.

That's to say that although living in Italy, my advices would only be from hearsay (*),
just as good as anyting you might find on the internet, or from other travelers here who'd actually been there.

Florence would be ideal for just a meeting, as I'd get there by train, and I wouldn't likely lock up or derail your sightseeing and museums plan.
Should I visit Chianti or Volterra & S.Gimignano myself, I wouldn't think other than doing it by car. That would be nice as it would be new to me too, but I'd risk more to be a "palla al piede" for your family trip there.
(*) A "family man" colleague of mine warmly recommended this B&B http://tinyurl.com/jgn2nhf
in a medieval castle-like building located just outside Siena as a base for car trips to Volterra and nearby hilltowns
In any case I'd be as much a tourist as you, hardly a "local link" who could guide or boost your experience.
Besides, much will depend on my fitness in 10 months, as of now I'd barely walk a mile withouth heavily panting not the ideal tourism companion if not for a lunch

Thanks MoSe! No worries. We are not power walkers anymore either. I do realize that climbing narrow steep streets will be part of the "charm" of this trip.
I see that Milan is a long (3.5 hr) trip from Florence. Not exactly within a day trip range. Too bad. It would be nice to meet up and have you buy us drinks and dinner.
