Maybe the UK does want to be the 51st state.

Or would it be the 52nd since Canada was probably annexed some where along the way? So anyway it used to be Americans copied everything British, we even had our bands singing in fake British accents because they thought it was cool, but now it seems the British can't get enough of American cultural imports. It's not just Halloween and passing their own Freedom of Information Act any more and now British teens all want to go to a school Senior Prom. I mean how much more American can you get? You might as well start singing Yankee Doodle and raise the stars & stripes.

On a different note Proms really are a great tradition for kids to mark graduation and the transition from kids to supposed adults. Not to mention it's a chance to get dressed up, drunk, and laid.

What's so special about a "school Senior Prom"?

We had an end of year 6, 10 and 12 formals back when I was in school. Basically the same thing, so not really seeing the big deal here...

Teenie boppers get to dress up and pretend they're lady Diana while guys get to wear designer tuxes, which they really don't care about but think will get them laid, and then they get to take part in the whole high school popularity contest which is the prom king & queen. It really is so important to the self esteem of these young women while the guys mainly want to get drunk and are hoping their dates will agree to sleep with them.

So it is a very special occasion.

Also, I'm not saying drink driving doesn't happen here, but it's surprising the difference between how unacceptable it is here and how acceptable it seems sometimes in the states.

In the form of a high school prom? Yes. We have exported it to Canada and now, it seems, the UK though.

It's all a matter of being caught. It's A.O.K. to drink and drive but it's not ok to be caught. So just don't get caught or better yet hire a limo so you can get fucked up yet not be caught by the coppers.

You say high school prom, I say Maturaball.

I suppose most countries have similar rituals for high school students marking adulthood.

No it isn't. Absolutely not ok to drink and drive. And no-one here thinks it is (even if they might do it).

That's what I mean by the cultural difference.

I pretty much won't drive if I've had any alcohol.

Yeah, all that's happened is people are calling the End of School Party a Prom. We always had it, it's just shorthand.

They have a few round abouts here and I don't mind them since they really are faster then the old intersections with traffic lights.

People just need to learn when to yield. Right now, they barrel right on in when they shouldn't.

It's even worse. According to the german wikipedia, France has about half of the roundabouts worldwide. ("Besonders in Frankreich, das mit 20.000 Kreisverkehren (ronds-points, giratoires) die Hälfte aller weltweit vorhandenen Kreisverkehre besitzt...")

I mean, driving on the one side is one level of craziness, but then going the wrong way round a round about?! Insanity.

Free-flowing? I think they missed that bit when they started putting them in Australia.

No, insanity is an Italian driver going the other wrong way ( English) in a round about, in a car that has the driver on the correct side! Scary as hell
