smartphones

O.K. wiseguys and wisegals. The perfessor and I are ready to join the 21st Century. We are in the market for the new-fangled smartphone thingies. Which is the best: iPhone, BlackBerry, or Droid?
And please, no comments about my old eyesight, arthritic fingers, diminished mental capacity, diapers, drool, . . . . . . What was I saying? Who are you freaks? Why isn't Keith here? Where do I live?

It depends

If you just want to type emails/IMs mostly, Blackberry
If you want something that 'just works' with the caveat that you're at the mercy of Steve Jobs' every command: iPhone
If you want a phone that lets you do anything but is a bit more techy, an Android (Droid or Incredible or Nexus One are the ways to go here)

HTC Desire is a very nice phone. Nexus One but with a more user friendly (less techy) UI.

Just upgraded to an LG GR500 after about 5 years with and older one. Now if I only kept it charged and carried it.

I dutifully call my mother from it once a week.

I got two Nexus Ones for free. One for attending a Google conference where everyone got one, the other one for having one of the most popular applications in Canada with a rating above 4 stars.

I'm desperately trying to resist the temptation of buying the new iPhone and the best alternative seems to be the new Samsung Galaxy S, which seems to be getting rave reviews...

Should I get it or not, and is there something even bigger and more amazing coming round the corner, seeing as I'll be stuck with it for a while...?

there's always something bigger and more amazing around the corner, so you can wait a lifetime for better stuff. I read good things about the Galaxy S, and I think Android will be bigger then the iPhone eventually.

Hmm. Apparently I can upgrade now if I want.

18 months, £40 a month, free handset more calls, texts etc. than I could ever use.

Can get the same plan on an iPhone 4 but have to pay £119 for the handset.

As coincidence would have it, I bought the Galaxy last night and it should be coming online tonight at some pointÖ

From my research the Galaxy seems as good as, if not better than the iPhone 4 virtually across the board.

For good comparisons etc: http://www.careace.net/2010/06/08/co...sung-galaxy-s/

Basically, as far as I can tell, itís a question of style over substance.

That comparison page is useless. For a start it's on Samsung forum, so of course it's going to favorably compare the Samsung phone (even though some of their stats indicate the opposite). Then there are the many examples of pure advertising bullshit rhetoric:

"Sound: Both have standard 3.5mm headphone jack, play mp3s and alert via vibration. However, iPhone 4 does not have DNSe (Digital Natural Sound Engine) as Samsung Wave has."

Er, of course it doesn't because DNSe is a term Samsung made up, it's meaningless.

Then there are the bits that don't even make sense:

"Video Calling: Both are able to preform the task; however, iPhone 4 is WiFi only whereas Samsung Wave can do this with apps that may appear in the future."

What?

Yeah, other than the camera flash it does seem to kill the iPhone on features.

Even though I mostly listen to MP3s I do find the radio on my current phone is quite nice to have so that's a bonus too.

Pro: Cheaper, bigger screen, more features, better app philosophy, radio, longer standby, Flash, pretty much every video encoding etc.
Con: No flash

Camera flash... So it has Flash bit no flash. Urgh.

D'oh, didn't spot that - but it does link to non pro Samsung sites as well...

Also, every other review site Iíve looked at compares the Galaxy favourably over the iP4.

I agree that not putting a flash on the camera seems an odd oversight, but for me itís the functionality of the phone as a smartphone thatís of more importance and Iíve always found myself disappointed in phone camera performance to date as it isÖ

Hmm. I think generally the reviews are quite mixed, I would say 50/50 in favour of each one depending on the priorities of the reviewer.

What?
iPhone 4's FaceTime video calling can only be used on WiFi, not 3G.

Android video calling apps have no such restriction.

There's errors in the link comparing iphone and the galaxy, BTW.

The iPhone 4 does not have a 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU, it's an 800MHz Cortex A8.
The Galaxy S does not have a 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU, it's a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU.

That says the iPad is clocked at 1 GHz, not how fast the iPhone one is clocked though.

The iPhone 4's CPU is the same as the 1 GHz chip in the iPad, but it's clocked at around 800 MHz to reduce power consumption.

To confirm, Apple announced it has the same "A4" chip as the iPad which was 1GHz. But they intentionally didn't say the speed in announcing the iPhone 4. It's since been uncovered it runs at 800MHz due to power/heat constraints.

The whole "A4" chip branding thing is silly anyway. The "A4" chip is just a Cortex A8 CPU with another off-the-shelf graphics chip and some minor power saving tweaks.

OK I guess, though I haven't properly sat down with it to sort everything out as I've been too busy...

So, there's a couple of issues, like the signal seems to fluctuate wildly at the moment and the battery draws down really quickly during use so far.

The first I haven't addressed yet, though hasn't been a massive problem and the second I've been told improves after the first few total discharge and recharges of the battery. Supposedly.

There's probably apps for these issues etc. I'm just being my usual lazy self...

You need the Android Advanced Task Killer app. Free download. You can also go into the battery use in the config to see which apps are causing the drainage.
