I don't mean to bragg (but actually I do)
I've placed 100€ worth of bets, like everytime, and call correctly the two draws of France and England, only this time I did a cumulative bet... et voila...

11/06/2010 10:26:23 Draw 0-0 @ 8.00, €5.00 Single 5.00 40.00
11/06/2010 10:23:47 Draw @ 3.20, €10.00 Single 10.00 32.00
11/06/2010 10:23:47 Draw @ 4.20, €10.00 Single 10.00 42.00
11/06/2010 10:17:24 Draw 0-0 [B] @ 8.00
Draw @ 4.20
1B + 1/1, 1 bets * €10.00 10.00 336.00
Total 60.00 465.00

the cumulative (banker's bet) is still on, with my other predictions being Italy and Germany also drawing on top of it

Good luck with the Germany draw, I'll be happy if that one comes off!

betting on the mediocrity of England is always an easy one, but you can always count on the germans to fuck things up...

I hadn't seen the aussies play for the last 4 years, I should have done my homework...

It wouldn't have made much difference. We have played pretty well the last 4 years. We went through our WC qualification undefeated, held the Netherlands to a 0-0 draw and so on. I'm not sure that anything would have pointed to such a bad defeat. I didn't think we were much chance of winning and even a draw was a bit of a long shot.

yes it was, let's say a semi long one (a lot of "big" teams start their campaign slowly, which is what inspired this precise series of bets in the first place), but if you bet on "sure" outcomes you don't make a dime anyway

Germany was a lot quicker than I remembered, you would have fared better against a slower and more physical team (like France or Italy)

http://football.cyr.nl/index.php

Ranking (top 15)
1) maroule 20
1) MoSe 20

so that annoying italian didn't die after all, and he's still one of the top predictors...

Quite possibly true. An interesting stat I also heard was that in the 6 world cups Germany has been to (I am presuming a unified Germany here, they didn't give details), Germany has won 5 out of 6 first up matches and drawn the other one. The comment was something about Germany being fast starters in WCs.

That's a weird stat, they were West Germany in 1990, since then we're on the 5th world cup as Germany, and but there were more than 1 as Germany before that.

Perhaps the stat was just that out of the last 6 world cups they won 5 drew 1.

Let's see, opening group matches for Germany at recent WCs...
2010 - 4-0 v Australia

Before last night
2006 - 4-2 v Costa Rica
2002 - 8-0 v Saudi Arabia
1998 - 2-0 v USA
1994 - 1-0 v Bolivia

As West Germany
1990 - 4-1 v Yogoslavia
1986 - 1-1 v Uruguay
1982 - 1-2 v Algeria

So the last 6 matches as Germany (or West Germany) were 5 wins and a draw, the previous 5 of which were wins, the 6th last being the draw.

So out of the last 7 world cups, only Saudi Arabia were worse than you. Algeria, Bolivia and Costa Rica all suffered only narrow defeats.

Algeria beat them. USA lost 0-2.

But, yes. They played well. We played shit. Said that before, I was just looking to find out what the quote was about that I heard.

Interestingly, I was clearly supporting the Germans in the game, despite you Aussies being the plucky underdogs.

I think that had more to do with their quality football than any nationalistic bias though.

teams starting with fireworks almost never last the distance... there are teams specialising in first round excellence and later sinking (Argentina and Holland particularly)

but there is at least one counterexample to assage the german fears, France in 98 started very strong (also against a weak team), then blipped a bit (paraguay, italy) before finsihing strong

My predictions before the WC started had Germany getting to the semis, I still think they can do at least that.

not a terribly audacious prediction, they often manage the semis even when they play crap

Yes, I mean I don't think them starting off playing well will spoil their world cup. I didn't phrase it well.

You should put your original 100 back in with more bets. That way you've got 660 profit either way and still have the 100 riding on bets. You lose it all, you've still made 660 after all.

Maroule & MoSe both dropped down the ranking, but maroule missed to predict 6 matches and MoSe 4

top 6 gained an impressive lead
1) Sambo 103
2) slotschi25 99
3) slotschi 97
4) Feufo 96
5) Kenneth 94
6) MauBro 93
they must have become much more precise after every team had played 2 matches at least

Kenneth is defending CG honor there (54p= all matches, 7 Exact score predictions, 22 right WDL)
KG after a dreadful start began getting it right with Ghana-Australia, and now he's well placed

21) kingghidra 79 (54p, 4E, 21r)

28) lightblue 76 (48p, 1E, 24r)
28) maroule 76 (48p, 4E, 20r)
34) MoSe 75 (50p, 6E, 17r)

49) Birdseed 56 (52p, 2E, 16r)

even getting the exact score for all the 6 matches they didn't predict (!), maroule & lightblue would have still been 2nd
