Essential software

I got a new budget-ish laptop to run my basic surfing on. What (free) software should I install on it? Antivirus and firewall are done, but I want suggestions for nearly everything else.

picassa (from google) for organising photos. GIMP for editing them.

Oh, sorry, Vista. Unfortunately.

I'm... acquiring Photoshop and InDesign as well.

Is there still no better WMP replacement than Winamp-and-VLC? I'm trying KMPlayer, but is there a better option? I'd like something fairly minimal with playlists over libraries, if possible.

Best torrent client?

Best browser?

Best office suit? Should I just go google docs?

WMP is great.

uTorrent.

Best browser is whatever you prefer. I use Firefox.

Office 2007. OpenOffice still doesn't do OOXML, and Office 2007 supports ODF natively now.

WMP is good these days, much better than winamp.

Office doesn't meet the 'free' criteria though.

But then again neither does Photoshop, which doesn't seem to have stopped Scabby.

It'll be "free" for me! (and at least 90% of all other Photoshop users, honestly.)

Foobar is a pretty decent Winamp alternative as well, with tabbed playlists and such. But I've avoided WMP for years now, so I've no idea how that compares. And it doesn't do video, so you'll still need VLC.

Yeah, what SP said. Maybe Opera slightly ahead of Firefox if you have performance constraints.

Foobar I'll look into. I'd prefer a really minimal audio player.

I have to say that's looking great. Precisely what I was after.
