Album of the year- "Aleph at hallucinatory mountain"

Yes, it's not even June yet.

It's a weird experience to have been a fan of Current 93 for 20 years (and dozens of albums) and be genuinely startled by a new release. Although they're an experimental band you could still get comfortable with them and know what to expect- richly chiming neofolk arrangements around complex meditations on God and apocalypse.

So I slipped the brand-new album into the stereo, and it promptly clawed my face off. Holy fuck, it's heavy. There's howling guitar feedback all over it, and drums. Drums! Not Nepali Pixie-chimes! Big, fuck-off, rock drums!

It's a long time since I've been that surprised by an album, and it's fucking brilliant. The line-up is a heavyweight one- alongside Tibet there's Ossian Brown and William Breeze (both from Coil), Andrew WK (Yes. That's "Andrew WK". Of "Party hard" infamy"), Baby Dee (pictured nude with his/her impressive baps out), Steven Stapleton (Nurse With Wound) and Sasha Grey (who I understand to be the current porn star Queen, or something. She's as comfortable singing here as she is photogenically taking seven inches up the bum, it would seem).

The album's on Spotify. As ever, Tibet's voice will alienate a good half of listeners. If you like it (and I do) it's a monster of an album.

Right, I'm listening to it on Spotify now. Have liked most/all of the Current 93 and associated stuff you've put various LWPs.

I love Andrew WK.

Are all those albums on Spotify really released in the last 2 years? Are some of them compilations?

No- there's stuff as old as 1983 on there. However they have all been re-released in the last 2 years.

I wish Spotify would put the original dates on though.
