listen without prejudice - the next chapter

if we gave a list of spotify songs each, we could listen to them instantly with no fucking about. we could even do one song each a week.

Will spotify have the random and obscure stuff that people like to contribute for LWP? I've not used it so don't know how deep the or extensive the coverage is.

I'm up for that, even though half the stuff I listen to is not on Spotify.

Oh, and I think I may have an invite left over if anyone needs it.

Pity you can't anonymize.

It's still invites only here. Strange - it was launched in Sweden first, why would the UK get free entry?

Not at all, unfortunately. I was part of the closed beta and there used to be so much more material on there before they started caring about "clearance" and shit.

btw, wouldn't listening to them via spotify tell you what the track was? kind of a fundamental of lwp no?

i guess it could be called "listen without prejudice as long as you don't have any weird prejudices based on the name of a song"

The prejudices normally come from knowing the artist.

ah. but it's an exercise in listening to a song properly without giving into your prejudice.

for example i dislike pete doherty but if there was an obvious pete doherty song on there i'd at least be able to judge the shape of the song, the emotion i get from it. plus i only dislike pete doherty because i think his music is awful. i might be pleasantly surprised by a pete doherty song. besides if i wasn't told that it was a pete doherty song i'd still know it was because it would obviously be him. and the whole exercise means that i can't turn it off in disgust, i have to listen to it enough so i can judge the song for what it is. the artist and the song are separate after all.

anyway, it was just a suggestion linking it to the "lwp" thing. we could give it a new name. since we have this amazing new thing that means i can suggest ten tracks to you and you can call them up literally instantly on your computer, the whole posting cds around the world thing seems silly.

I think it's still a good idea. No reason not to do it. Sounds like people can create playlists so we could do it in the old style and have it as one playlist for everyone to listen to, or just post up songs for people to check out.

No, I agree. Maybe we could do it with just really obscure music or a genre few people have any preconceived notions about?

that sound quite interesting. i'm more about good songs than obscurity - but they aren't mutually exclusive.

i wonder if we should have something random pick a genre, it might very well end up alternative american rock or transexual jpop - but we have to go with it whatever it is, then we pick songs that we know and like or try and discover some that we really like.

I was going to suggest Wikipedia's list of genres, but it tends to be a tad obscurist.

Why the obsession with genres? Seeing how it always end up with everyone trying to out-obscure each other, why not just have everyone add their favorite "obscure" songs to a playlist (like Scabby said).

well, like i said, i'm into good songs rather than obscurity but i thought i'd play along for the sake of the game. that's why i suggested we pick a random genre as a theme to try and avoid any sort of obscurity battle.

i'm not really sure what's going on any more. is lwp a game? is it meant to be themed? is it meant to be this hard?

i just want people to recommend music to me that i have to listen to and judge. that sounds fun. i'm gradually going off the idea because its starting to seem like hassle.

(The random debating is just a pre-amble.)

My thought is to do either Jazz or "classical"/western art music. I certainly don't have any prejudices in those particular genres.

LWP is a recommendations system. As far as I can tell, the hassle exists to attempt to make it a "fair" system. Which has meant: participants should recommend similar amounts, participants should provide similar amounts of feedback.
The secondary ideal is that participants should encounter new music (so as to be able to LWP), hence the tendency towards obscurity - because the field of non-obscure things is pretty well explored by people who like music. That's harder on spotify, so hence the desire to push it slightly more.

I'm not sure it matters though. Just pick a few tracks that people might not have heard before, post spotify links, profit. The main question (afaics) is whether each track gets its own thread or not.

didn't it used to be that you'd submit three tracks to one person, that person would put the tracks on cd and then everyone would listen and then do a short comment and then admit to submitting the tracks.

that seems like a good thing. i'm happy to compile it. all i need to do is add everyone's tracks to a playlist and post it here. then i guess we review. or something. or just enjoy the music without bothering people with our views.

Sounds great. Three tracks, any theme, just what we like at the moment and is available on spotify. I think that's a great setup.

okeydokey, i guess everyone should send me their tracks by pm. just a list will do and then i'll put them all together in a playlist. i reckon the deadline is friday.

then we can argue about how/if we review.

At least this setup allows anonymity when it comes to which poster posted what. That's good.

I'll have three tracks over later today.

Worth remembering that whenever there's a song on LWP that I think everyone must know, there are a good few people who've never heard it. Especially when it was only big in one country or whatever.
