Now I realise who the 12th poster is - it's Mr. Bas's original entry, the one he changed, but that I'd already saved down into the contest directory. Oh well, think of it as a bonus track.

Fuck fuckity fuck fuck.

It's got some sort of track recognition algorithm then.

I'll try re-uploading them using another service later (I'm at work now). Meanwhile, log in using the details in the other thread to hear full tracks.

Actually if someone would care to help to transfer these elsewhere (DivShare would be a good option) then I'd be damned happy. I'm quite stressed and about to move house and I thought I was done with this shit.

I'll probably add some comments tonight, when I have some time to listen to the tracks. First impression is not very positive, I'm afraid, despite my two excellent choices. Cheesy tracks, novelty songs, bad metal, it's all there.

Well I've made a start. Not terribly impressed thus far...

I've always found at least one new track worth listening to with these things but I've drawn a blank so far. Not Too Soon by Throwing Muses is my most-listened-to track according to last.fm - was that you Laz?

Track 4 was mine. It's "North American Scum" by LCD Soundsystem.

I'm not remotely ashamed by it. I think the album it's on (Sound of Silver") is absolutely brilliant, veering from Neu-style krautrock to Velvets pop, via moments of Beck-funk.

My pick was Track 10. It's "Drive Dead Slow" by Sahara Hotnights. I'm not embarassed by the song so much as the slightly childish crush my younger self had on bass player Johanna Asplund...

I submitted track 3, initially. It's a song called Indiscretion #243 by the Scottish band Aereogramme. They can sound a bit bombastic and pretentious every now and then, though, although it doesn't show very much in this fairly conventional rock song. I'm also not ashamed of liking it at all, which is why I changed my selection. Still, this track got on nevertheless.

My second selection was number 12. It indeed is Emperor, though it's not terribly old, 1999 I think. It is a cover of an older black metal song though, namely Aerie Descent by Thorns. Now, I'm not at all ashamed of liking (some) black metal, but there are certainly a number of shameful aspects about both the genre and these bands, too.

Many humourless, obsessive teen fans (see Laz's comment, too)? Check. Some of the artists being complete twats? Check: Varg Vikernes, Rob Darken, Jon Nödtveidt, Glen Benton, Euronymous, It, the entire NSBM scene. Criminal twats, even? Check: we have murderers, arsonists, and there's a somewhat disturbing obsession with nazism by a number of bands. Silly lyrics? Check: satanism is one thing, but how do you expect to be taken seriously if half the songs and band names reference dodgy, semi-Tolkien inspired fantasy? The idea that BM should be produced as poorly as possible in order for it to be kvlt? Check. And ridiculous pictures? Check and check .

My song ticks many of the boxes: stupid fantasy-inspired lyrics, a song that indeed doesn't really go anywhere, the original writer Thorns has been jailed as an accomplice to murder while the bassist of Emperor was jailed for church arson. But damn it, it's brilliant, I tell you. Brilliant!

I'm responsible for track 11, which is Urko's Conquest by Cathedral.

Cathedral are the brainchild - or possibly ass-child - of Lee Dorrian, formerly part of the classic late '80s Napalm Death line-up. Exactly what possessed him to abandon making fairly credible music in order to concentrate on writing terrible songs about witches and sci-fi, I don't know, but I find the results oddly compelling, in a train wreck kind of a way.

I think most of your comments were entirely accurate. They really are a dreadful excuse for a metal band, with their mentally subnormal riffs, ridiculous lyrics, and godawful off-key vocals. And yet that's somehow part of their appeal - there's something endearing about a band which persists in seeming to enjoy doing what they do as much as these guys do, even in the face of such colossal musical shitness. It's clear that they're not in it for money or fame, and that they have no pretensions to art - they're making music for the sheer love of performing, and at the end of the day I find that quality damned infectious.

And yes, I really am suitably embarrassed about it.

Mine was track 5, the Thin Lizzie cover. It's sung by a woman called Pastel Vespa*- Iain's comment about sunburnt tourists is spot-on: she began as a singer on cruise ships before releasing some cover albums.

Yes, it's pretty cheesy. It's all style and no substance, which is probably why I like it, lacking as I do any great sense of musical aethetics. But if it weren't a cover of a song I already like, I don't think I'd be listening to it. Which is why it's here in the Shame section, because normally I'm totally against shit (indeed almost any) cover versions.

For some reason, I find the complete lack of any regard for taste really amusing.

Track 2 was mine.

Laz's description sums it up really well, although I might have put a slightly more positive spin on the same things.

It's Skeleton Key by The Coral, a band I fairly vehemently slated when they first surfaced. I think I said they looked like they'd been brought up on an inner city farm project and just sang sea shanties.

Anyway I heard this on the radio amongst a load of other indie tosh, not knowing who it was, and really liked it. Yeah, it's sub Sprout Mask Replica tosh, but it seems like they were having fun making it and it's totally non-commercial (I say non-commercial, you say because it's too shit to buy) and I always respect a band shooting themselves in the head.

I should have guessed it was them really, there's a lot of the sea shanty about it, this song probably exhibits more extreme versions of all the reasons I didn't like them to start with. They're even singing about when they get shipwrecked. Arrr.

I'm Track 6

IT's Bert Kaempfert's Swingin' Safari.

When I was about 10 my dad used to work all day long during the week and at Saturday until about 3 pm. On sunday he used to sleep a lot.

Whe he returned from work on Saturday, he usually turned on the radio and we both listened to the Bundesliga games.

When there was a intermission, there was usually some easy listening music like Kaempert's, like Bacharach or Herb Alpert.

I still like some of the songs, because I think in some evil way they are perfect. Like a good dessert, sweet and light. Sometimes they hav a small little edge, like the bridge with the female voice in Safari. Amazing how a band can create the airy feeling of almost no-music.

The problem with Kaempfert is, the music has been heavily used as muzak or a blueprint for muzak. So it's a bit like audioactive waste now ...

Track 7 was mine. (And I'm sorry I didn't finish commenting on the rest, got s bit burnt out after posting them all.)

It's "Kissing My Love" by Cold Blood, verging between the horrendously ideologically unredeemable genres of "Horn Rock" and "Jazz-Funk". Whoever made the comparison to that disgusting, blackface charlatan Janis Joplin was spot on - these are her protégés.

So what we've got are over-aged seventies hippies (ick!) pretending to be black (ick ick!) and exaggerating all the "jungle" elements (of course - racists!). Simultaneously, it's also jazz-pretentious (don't get me started) and part of one of the nastier "organic" dead ends in history, mercifully erased from further influence by hip-hop and electronic music in the eighties.

Plus did I mention that it's one of my favourite songs and that I will jump around on the dance floor whenever I hear it?
