Eurovision Song Contest

First semi tomorrow - anyone except me a fan? (I've been blogging way too much about it, including reviewing all 43 entries.)

What are your favourites? Who do you think'll win? I've got a handful I think are a cut above the rest:

Oh, there are lots of western European entries in the semis that won't make the final, plus four countries ("The Big Four") have pre-bribed themselves into the final. But obviously an Eastern European entry will win, they always do because they're quite simply better.

Lack of interest.

Actually we did partecipate till the late '90 then our national TV apparently decided we couldn't care less

They were in nearly every contest up until 1997 and won twice, but quit after the contest received really low viewership figures several years running. They're apparently considering a re-entry after San Marino and Switzerland did Italian-language numbers this year...

The real question is why Luxembourg aren't in it, they've won it five times.

It's odd in the UK. It's seen as a great opportunity to laugh at the silly Europeans and their funny songs but there's also a slight underlying sense of confusion as to why we don't win when our music is clearly so much better than everyone elses in Europe.

The answer I guess is not that everyone hates us and votes against us for political reasons but more that we don't take it seriously, we don't pick big current pop stars to do it (why would they want to? it's embarassing!) and we generally don't pick good songs.

You music is clearly so much better?

Is that really a widespread belief in the UK?

I would say it was fairly widespread, yes. As ridiculous as that is.

It's probably partly because we export a lot of music but import very little other than American music, unless it's sung in English, in which case people probably think it's British or American influenced.

What makes Eurovision a joy to watch is Terry Wogan's sarcastic, mocking commentary. Has got worse since he was told to tone it down a couple of years ago!

Almost all successful music in the UK comes from UK / USA / Canada / Australia - not big on listening to music sung in other languages I 'spose.

Well the countries with the strongest commercial pop scenes tend to do the best, Britain excepted. In the past few years Greece, Turkey, Russia have consistently done fairly well.

Terry Wogan has announced that he'll probably stop presenting it, in view of the event's politicisation.

Wait, Terry Wogan, the man largely responsible for turning the Eurovision from a respectable but naff song contest to a silly spectacle wants to quit because it's just not about the music anymore?

"Largely responsible"? Seriously?

I would say Terry Wogan's attitude is a consequence of an increasingly farcical competition rather than a cause.

I remember I only used to follow the final votes with the Jeux-Sans-Frontičres-like table, without listening to the songs.
It was very exciting.
That was in the early '80s tho

Not wanting to sound controversial, but apart from the tiresome political voting, i think one reason the UK did so undeservedly bad was due to racism. We had the only black entrant and if you think how some English footie players get monkey noises made at them in modern Western countries like Spain, you would doubt some of the Eastern European countries would care to vote for us either. Any else agree with this?

Well, a black man won it in 2001, with all the Eastern countries present:

I guess the english song was boring stolen generic pop crap - as the German song was and both people deserved to be nuked.

And remember the strange orcish finns and that jewish transvestite won ...

Heck, last year it was won by a butch lesbian. The Eurovision audience is hardly known for its intolerance, except intolerance of good music.

The only other black entry I can think of in recent years came 8th, a respectable placement:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiMr8z5syD8

Actually, I don't think Eastern Europeans are any less racist than their Western counterparts, it's just that there are practically no black people there at all, so the reaction to blackness is probably more bemused than prejudiced. A friend of my parents from Tanzania came to Hungary in the sixties and everyone was really nice to him but didn't know what to make of him, old ladies offered to wash him and stuff.

Now, if the performer had been roma, then you could have expected racist reactions.

Russia. They bought themselves the win to a degree, with loads of money spent on production, promotion and staging.
