Song Credits

In an effort to achieve band unity, some bands just put "all songs by <bandname>" in their liner notes. Personally, I prefer to know who is doing most of the songwriting, and see how much of a collaborative effort the music is.

What say you?

It's a royalties thing, isn't it?

no, royalties aren't affected by what's written on the album sleeve. it can be a political thing. for example the frontman of a band is the one everyone knows and sees in the music press but is actually employed as a session player and someone else in the band writes and records all the tunes. so it's deemed a good idea to write the band name in the credits.

How does the royalties thing work then? Do you fill in a form with separate songwriter credits? If you do, is it ever the case that the album sleeve says one thing and the songwriting credit another?

Yeah, you sign all sorts of things. prs/mcps forms etc. the writers have to sign the publishing deal too.

this is exactly the case with dioyy. the front man doesn't write for the band and both he and i were session players but as i've co-written a large chunk of the album they've had to re-do the publishing contract and give me an advance. i believe the management want to put "all songs by does it offend you, yeah" on the album sleeve so the whole thing looks even. especially as the front man is in the nme "cool list".
