Civ 4 discussion thread

Continued from the "what have you been playing lately" thread. Discussion about whether or not to build the great wall.

If you have time to build the great wall you certainly have time to build a barracks and a couple of units instead.

It also gives you Great Engineer points which are pretty useful. The other early wonders I tend to build end up in Great Prophets which are fine if I've managed to grab a religion but I'd rather have an engineer to grab another wonder.

You could just build a forge and assign an engineer to get engineer points.

The AI builds the Great Wall so early that you have to really beeline for it and I just want to be building units workers and settlers at that point (possibly monuments and/or barracks if I really have to).

At that stage I generally don't want to be assigning people, I want workers on tiles. I only use specialists early on if I've got eg loads and loads of food but no production.

I think running an Engineer specialist is as good as working a normal mined hill + great engineer points.

Has anyone tried the Final Frontier mod yet? Very impressed by the amount of work that's gone into it. Kind of a GalCiv-lite without the random events.

The opening stages are quite slow with solar systems quite far apart and ships only have 1 (max 2) movement.

You can build on different planets within a solar system as well as being able to extend the population limit with Habitation modules.

Resources are usually too far away from systems to fall within a colony's influence so you can build starbases (50? defence, build a missile every 15 or so turns) to extend it. Resources improve production speeds for certain unit types rather than being a requirement.

Still only mid-game but it looks like there could be a good tactical battle element later on with carriers and squadrons etc.

I haven't tried any of the mods, I still haven't fully got to grips with the normal game yet.

Plus... I really should play GalCiv at some point.

GW is easy to get and depending on your race and stone, somewhat fast to build.

I never tried an early war with anyone, the AI seems to build units a lot faster then I can so I try to avoid war until at least the Middle Ages.

Yeah, you have to be quite close, get lucky with early copper and brutally deforest and whip your cities to breaking point.

Have a favorite civ out of the new ones?

I really liked Portugal and Holland as well as the Byzantines.

Why random?

I play random for the AI, but I tried almost all of them, still have to try Kmer and ethiopia.

I also tried an all European civ game which was interesting (I played as the Celts under Boudeca) and had a great war with France, took all their cities but one, and made them a vassel.

The Celts are great BTW, not for their lame assed unit, but becuase when you upgrade you get that unit's special promotions which are really cool.

I like random because it makes me try leaders who I otherwise would ignore because I didn't like something about them.

As I said in the other thread I played as the Netherlands recently, really like their special unit the East Indiaman (extra 2 strength compared to galleon) really helped dominate the seas early on.

The new continent options rock, the ability to control size, shape and quantity are cool.

Are tactical nukes a new unit since Civ4 vanilla? I do like a big explosion, have even fired one at my own territory in desperation!

They are new to this expansion I think. I've never fired a nuke in Civ 4.

Worth it for the brilliant animation alone!

I fired about 6 ICBM's, and 3 tacticals in my last game as the Netherlands (basically I was losing), was on a smaller slightly poorer continent then a couple of rivals who both decided to surprise war dec me and attack at almost the same time. However i think it just made them angrier...

The last "nukes" I fired were Planet Busters...


I keep intending to have a nuclear war game but always get distracted along the way and end up doing something else. Maybe next time

I have used nukes, they don't completely wipe out units on the first shot, but they will with the second!

I also forgot to mention the new spaceship victory, they went back to civ 2 and you don't win until the ship arrives, not at launch.

Tac nukes are new to this expansion.

I was being plagued by a powerful Incan navy so tac nukes were really useful for dealing with that (cheaper and more effective than building battleships to beat said navy).

Interestingly in that game one of the random events came up with a challenge to build a powerful navy taskforce 4 destroyers, 2 battleships, 2 carriers + planes, and pit it against a city for some kind of reward. Was novel enough to take my focus away from defence and build said navy only to be mass invaded!

I've gotten that event once, but I don't remember what the reward was.

So far the best event I have seen was thge build colloseum one, that made their influenece much higher.

I got a build 10 swordsmen event in my last game. Since I had no iron and none in sight, I pretty much ignored it. But it was a nice change from the 10 swordsmen barbarians appear next to your least defended city and raze it events.

One of my most common mistakes at the start of the game is to rush city building and over-extend myself so barbarians appear and raze a couple of cities, before I have defenses properly in place. Bastards!

Well, finally got the new expansion and played around with it a bit as the Greeks.

Now, taking into account that I didn't play the original all that much, and didn't play Warlords at all in fact, I'm not noticing major differences really. Just tweaks, more units and wonders and a couple of techs.

Having said that, I haven't played around with Spies yet, which I should get around to doing.

The spying thing is quite a big difference. If you fall too far behind in passive spying some of your competitors fall off the various graphs in the informations section and if you get far enough ahead you can see what they are researching.

finished my first big campaign on BTW yesterday, on "immense" map (world map), 10 civ, playing the Inca on Monarch, won the space race. I had tried Ethiopia as my first, on Europe map, and lost, comprehensively beaten by Carthage.

THe tweaks are great. I don't use the corporations that much because I often choose Nationalised economy (whatever the exact title of that civic) to keep the city costs down, but they look very interesting for the late game, depending on your available ressources of course. The new units are cool, and so are the new leaders (trying Justinian next). I have yet to try the mods, the fall from heaven (heroic scfi) is getting very good reviews here.

I think Monarch is my natural level, as I'm challenged to win a game there. Prince is a walkover, but Emperor (is that the one above Monarch) looks unfeasible: had a try once and was totally off the pace of my rivals even before 0 AD. I have to consolidate my game, my cities are still pretty much jack of all trades, while I should have them clearly separated by function (military, great men, financial, etc.). I also normally take a lot of risks by being fairly light on the military side at the start, building up only later on. When sharing a continent with Roosevelt or Gandhi, that's fine, but Moctezuma, Genghis and Boudicea (the bitch) are less forgiving.

Just started intermediate game 2 of the BtS tri league tournament. It actually seems like quite a cool idea, and without giving anything away, the start of this game certainly makes for an interesting game!
