Best Drum tracks ever
I'm doing a mixtape for my drummer-wannabe sister-in-law containing only music with good drum tracks. Any suggestions?

Any track from Songs from the Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age. No-one Knows is the classic Air Drumming track off that.

Will check out both.
A variety of genres is something I'm going for so if you've got a really, really well-drummed track in some totally left-field musical mode I'd love to hear it. For instance, I'm definately putting "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" by The Crystals on there.

More of less anything by Slayer! Mandatory Suicide is good!

Stephen Morris from Joy Division generally played in a pretty interesting and different way to most of his contempories. Of the top of my head I can only really think of She's Lost Control to support this, but there are loads of other good examples.

Some DJ Shadow? Great hip-hop drumming on his records...Also do you know the "Amen" break? it's available here both looped and in its original context..

Yes, I know the Amen break. Some classic breakbeat will definately go on there, Either "Amen, Brother", "Apache", "Funky Drummer" or possibly "The Mexican" (best song, dullest drums). Or "Mary Mary" by The Monkees, possibly the most unexpected track to have become a sampling staple.

Dave Lombardo (Slayer) is great, but he does more interesting stuff with Fantomas IMO. The Directors Cut is them doing a load of horror themes. Some great stuff on that. Bit experimental/disturbing though.
http://www.myspace.com/fantomasband I'm assuming you've got the funk/soul angle sewn up already SB? |

No I meant Tomorrow Never Knows! Bloody X-posts.
I'll dig through my reggae stuff but I think the best drums are fairly heavily manipulated unfortunately.

Indeed, indeed
Ah, a bit of research tells me my favourite reggae tune of all time is Tenament Yard by Jacob Miller.

A lot of the songs that my favourite early hip-hop guys sampled - but of course I don't know what that is.

Inevitably something off The Ultimate Breaks and Beats series, first edition from 1986. "Amen, Brother" by the Winstons, for instance, has been sampled by just about everyone ever because it is so fucking easy.

Maybe some Jazz-Funk? Generally an abhorrent genre, I'd agree, but the drumming is fairly creative. "When I'm kissing My Love" by Cold Blood or something.

"His distinctive techniques are especially prominent in regard to the band's drum sounds, which are awash in reverb, the icy notes echoing and reverberating through a spare and seemingly vast sonic backdrop".

It'd have to be pretty damn good to take up a quarter of the compo! Are there no, er, shorter options?

I'm ending up cheating a bit (using other peoples' lists) 'cause I wouldn't say a drum track was something I'd usually notice. Pity she isn't a bassist.

Again a bit more in the metal direction: Tool and Mastodon both have some great drumming. Mastodon is probably not too accessible and they overdo the prog angle a bit every now and then, but it might be nice to include some of Danny Carey's drumming in Tool. Not sure what particular song to recommend, but Ticks and Leeches, The Grudge and Aenema are good examples.

Are you telling me Mastodon are even more pretentiously progresive than Tool?

They're more extreme certainly, and can be quite prog, but not always. I haven't heard their latest album but it's apparently rather progressive, but what I can recommend is Megalodon, Island and Blood and Thunder, and for wanky proggery, Aqua Dementia and Hearts Alive.

Maybe some Converge would be nice as well, their drummer (Ben Koller I think) is quite good. Again, picking songs is a bit of a problem as I'm not usually focusing on the drums and I don't have any Converge around atm, but from memory Dark Cloud, Thaw, Last Light and Homewrecker all feature impressive drumming. Give it a try I'd say.

Oooh, just had a thought. Got any Primus on there? Tim Alexander was excellent.
Tommy the Cat should be easy to find or Wynnona's Big Brown Beaver. John the Fisherman is on Guitar Hero 2 if you want a contemporary reference. The first band to actually allow the makers access to the original recording masters for the game. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Jq1nBvClI...elated&search= |

Primus features extremely heavily on soulseek, feel free to suggest whatever more obscure track you can think of as well.

Cryptopsy feature some pretty impressive drumming. Check out Angelskingarden or Endless Cemetary for what I'd see as decent examples.
Joey Baron's drumming for Naked City was also rather good. Pretty much any track from their eponymous album ought to showcase that. The drummer on Frank Zappa's Joe's Garage album won some kind of award for his playing on that record, but I have no idea what the names of any of the tracks are. Which is a little less than helpful of me. ![]()

Here is the end result. Decided not to put any metal on in the end - she's a metalhead already so she doesn't need any additional encouragement.
1 The Strangeloves – I Want Candy 2 Queens Of The Stone Age – No One Knows 3 Fabulous Counts – Lunar Funk 4 Small Faces – Afterglow Of Your Love 5 Sandy Nelson – Teen Beat 6 Preston Epps – Bongo Rock 7 Cozy Cole – Topsy II 8 Kashmere Stage Band – Scorpio 9 The Velvet Underground - I'm Waiting For The Man 10 Augustus Pablo – King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown 11 The Raspberries – Overnight Sensation (Hit Record) 12 The Hollies – Look Through Any Window 13 Primus – Tommy the Cat 14 Jan and Dean – Surf City 15 The Roadrunners - Every Man For Himself 16 William Shatner – Common People 17 Dungen – Panda 18 Aretha Franklin – (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone 19 The Surfaris – Wipe Out 20 King Curtis – Memphis Soul Stew 21 Stevie Wonder – Too High 22 The Crystals – Santa Claus Is Coming To Town 23 Kinks – Victoria A mixture of stuff I found by listening, stuff I remember airdrumming to, suggestions from, er, just Funko in the end I think and just a little too much from Max Weinberg's "Let There Be Drums" series of compos. Good shit, though, the man obviously knows his stuff.

Actually, only pride prevents me from putting it on. (It was on one of the Max Weinberg compos and I'd inevitably have to replace something I put on myself.)
