Microsoft Word hyperlinking question

I can put a hyperlink into a word document, and CTRL click it and it links fine

the links are to network drive files and are very long

when I save the file, the links get truncated - something like

C:\document\subfile\subsubfile\file.ppt

becomes something like

\...\...\subsubfile.ppt

I probably have my slashes reversed, but you get the idea - the links no longer function once you save the file

is there a way to make that work?

Interesting. I can save the document with the link to my PC drive and it doesn't shorten the file location in the hyperlink - its saving it to a network drive that breaks it...

Do you put file://C:\document\subfile\subsubfile\file.ppt

If you do and it doesn't work, Word is shit.

The network won't be able to resolve C:\etc\etc. Because it has no idea what your drive structure is. When you save it to the network the link to C:\ will try and link to that folder on the network computer you saved the file to. That directory structure might not exist.

If you want to do that, you need to save the link network style like: ComputerName\Drive\Folder\Subfolder\Filename

I'd go with Venom's answer, it sounds right. And make sure you find a good permanent network location to store your files, preferably a designated networked folder, not just some ad-hoc shared job you make on your own C:\

I have a C drive, a personal network drive, and countless other shared network drives

and we previously discovered moving a word file with links in it from one network drive to another breaks every damn link in it

I'll try to figure out the network style linking- the problem will be when I try to teach it to 35 other coworkers that know next to nothing about computers. The blind leading the blind.

Thanks!
