Rebirth of the MP3 Player Thread

So we're buying one anyway since my CD player broke. Grumble Grumble.

Advice on a mid price (cirka $250/150) hard-disk player that has good soundquality and battery life please?

The Ipod seems a tad overpriced for me.

I've been looking at an MP3 player called Archos Gmini something which looked okay for 130 or so.

Every player seems to advertise its Windows Media Player support. I would if at all possible not touch that piece of bloated crapware with a barge pole. "Doesn't support windows media, coz it sucks" would be a better recommendation.

Every player but Apple's has support for WMP because it's just a standardized format to compete with Apple. You don't have to use WMP, it's just an option.

And WMP11 isn't half bad. Better than iTunes, to be sure, which Apple forces you to use.

Yep, they've battered WMP into a useable shape now. I have started using it these days. Can't stand iTunes.

Well, I hate iTunes and my PC is too old to support it and WMP11 so I don't prarticularly care, I'm sticking with Winamp 5 thanks.

Drag-and-drop USB transfer support would be good.

Fair enough, I used to use winamp but version 5 just annoyed me too much. And it seems to have been left behind in features these days.

I'd recommend the one I got the 5gb Iriver H10 (or something)... except you cannot transfer songs via explorer only via the supplied software. (which is a GUI nightmare .. and red)

I don't mind as long as it's Win98 (not SE) compatible.

I really don't understand how anyone can hate iTunes. I not even aware of any alternatives that can do half the stuff it does, let alone do it as slicky and intuitively. What's wrong with it?

Intuitive?!?!

Maybe for Mac users. But then people say mac's are intuitive, I have no idea how to use them.

iTunes is awkward. If you want to remove something from the library you'd expect a "Delete" command or similar?
It's called Clear. Which isn't actually.

Exactly! Like I wanted to find out how to see songs by artist/album etc. That's called "browser". Which makes sense once you know, but I didn't try that option because I assumed it was a web browser. So it took me ages to find it.

You can do most stuff. There are some things I find I miss.

You can create a playlist, and browse stuff and then drag it onto the play list, but you can't see the "now playing" list and the browser for all your songs playlist in the same window like in WMP (or at least I don't know how to do that). So you can't drag stuff into the right position on the list and you have to change between them.

It's a bit annoying you can't do "import all media files on my machine" like you can in WMP.

Once you get it into shape, it's ok. The sorting within the browser is certainly faster and better than the WMP method.

I don't really 'hate' iTunes, it just annoys me that things aren't called what you expect or to be found where you'd expect them.

You can, only it's called "convert files to mp3" or something like that.

You can do all those things you mention. To see two playlists at the same time double click on the name of one of them and it opens in a second window. To sort songs by album or artist or whatever just click the album or artist heading, you don't need to use the browser at all. You can do an "import all media..." thingy, but I can't remember how off the top of my head.

Plus the iTunes music store is awesome.

I want the browser so I can quickly view a list of albums on my machine not have to scroll through all the songs.

Good news about the other things.

My point is, they aren't intuitive it's confusing and annoying. Double click to pop up a new window?! Who'd think that'd happen.

This is interesting. my "what are you listening to" feature on WMP had broken for a while, it seems that what's happened is that iTunes has taken it over. How'd that happen?!

That said, if I can find out how to do these other things (especially if anyone can remember how to import everything), I might start using it because it does seem to be faster.

The first time you run it doesn't it say something like "Do you want iTunes to detect all music on your hard-drive now?"

I don't know.

But if it did, I didn't and now I have loads of music added since then.

Tizzy reckons there is an option. I haven't found it yet.

I did find the "eye" icon for browser though.

You can do "Advanced\Consolidate Library" maybe but that warns you it'll copy all music into your iTunes directory and I don't want to do that.

What? Intuitive?

There isn't even a frickin' stop button!

It takes up massive amounts of system resources.

It also doesn't support some customization I really need -- for instance, I like having the "track #" column before the "track title" column in playlists. iTunes forbids such a thing.

Opens in a second window?? Why the fuck would you want multiple windows for a music player?

That's one thing that REALLY annoys me about the MacOS UI, for every single functionality of a program lets spawn new windows! AND! AS a special intuitive bonus! We won't provide taskbar-like functionality to list active windows for easy window maintenance.

And the iTunes music store sucks. Anything I would purchase on there I cannot play on my Xbox 360 or in Winamp or Windows Media Player, which is a MAJOR downside.

There are LOADS of reasons for having two windows of the same playlist open at the same time, Asher.

At my radio station we've got Ancient WinAmp 2.88 as our music player because it's the most recent player that supports the feature. One playlist contains background music, the other trailers, jingles, advertising soundfiles etc. An incredibly useful distinction, since you often have to mix from one to the other. In fact, several shows have a third and fourth playlist up with the music files they're using for the show, and never use CDs at all...

Well there's also funko's reason (one window containing the playlist you're constructing, one for listening to tracks).

And, um...

Why are you against the feature anyway?

WMP 11 really is quite good. I don't think I'd use it as a media player, but as an interface for my MTP media player (iRiver Clix), it's very easy to use.
