Essential PC Games - summary please

Haven't been able to play new games for ages

New PC on the way.

What should I get and why? I tend to be into short attention span blasters, fun MP games. Stuff I can beat real people at (or lose to them).

I'm pretty much getting Half Life 2.

That Warhammer 40K RTS looked fun from the demo but was a bit slow on my machine.

I have chaos league from the CG competition.

Far Cry is worth playing now you have a new box.

Based on your criteria there are various games i love that i wouldn't recommend to you.

Battlefield 2 is out in March (allegedly), i think quite a few people from here will be playing that.

I haven't played Rome: Total War yet but you might like it. You can borrow my medieval total war if you like. Ditto 40k, i have the full version of that if you want to borrow it.

Yeah, I put the criteria in for that reason. MMORPG or whatever I can't see myself having (or making) time for for instance.

Ah yes, borrowing 40K would be good.

Pro Evo 4 is fun on the PC, but you'll probably have it on PS2. I like playing it online with mates.

Doom 3 is a pretty scary FPS and will showcase your new system!

Sims 2 is good fun, if you like that kind of thing.

Battlefield 1942 is a great online game and loads of people are still playing it.

Football Manager 2005 is essential!

Good shit Matt cheers.

This KOTR that everyone's playing, I take it it's an RPG kinda like Baldurs Gate etc.?

I played a bit of Baldurs Gate 2 and liked it once I got used to things a bit but I kind of got distracted and never went back to it.

yeah pretty similar, but with kind of third person graphics rather than the 2d top down baldur's gate style

rpg mechanics the same as the ad&d style though

dont bother with the warhammer RTS unless you really like RTS and dont mind that playing it has no resemblence to playing the table top game. Now if they had done warhammer 40K:total war - that would have been cool.

Rome Total war is very good

Would recommend theif:deadly shadows too.

would play battlefield 2 but I may boycott it on the basis its an EA game.

Going back a bit X2 is worth a go if you are into that sort of game.

I played the demo and it seemed 40K like enough. Although the units did run around a bit like headless chickens. It is based on Warcraft III I think which I really enjoyed.

There was a Fantasy Battle game years ago that had the units in formations and stuff but that's not really 40K

I was thinking more of the way the game turns into a production race rather than a actuall army v army battle.

Would have liked to have had the base building bit and the fighting seperated out.

It also seemd a little too gung-ho. The numbers of dreadnoughts downed in some games I have seen would have practically wiped out a chapters resources!

KOTOR (Haven't played 2 yet, but the first is utterly brilliant. A bit like Baldur's Gate but you can finish it much faster, it's more action oriented, and everything is voiced.)

And if you can afford the monthly sub, World of Warcraft. It's probably the perfect thing for a socially orientated gamer who wants to blow a spare 10 hours on a dull weekend.

I play Neverwinter Nights online. I bought the Platinum Edition on eBay for C$30, and there's no fee for online play. The servers where I play are more roleplaying-oriented than action-oriented, but it's great fun and you don't need to dedicate time to it to make it worth the money like you do with an MMORPG.

What is a MORPORK anyway? (other than other half of ANKH)

I know what an MMORPG is.

Hang on... if it's a deliberate geek misspelling I'm not going to be amused.

MMORPGs are not for the casual gamer unless you play COH. If he couldn't get through BG he should never try any MMO other than COH, and even then he should wait till COV is out with PVP.

ANyway, the games I recommend.

Sims2, with the new Uni expansion pack coming out in about 2 weeks. Awesome fun. It is the game most people expected sims 1 to be.

KOTOR 1 and 2. Even if you got bored with Bal Gate, KOTOR is much better.

Ever play Prince of Persia sand of time? Awesome game. Don't get the one that was released a few months ago though, it is ass.

GAl Civ is better than Civ 3 and cheap.

If you want to try a MMORPG many of them have free trial periods where you download the sofware and can play free for 2 weeks or more.

I know SWG is doing it, and the game has improved vastly. EQ1 is doing it, I think COH is planning to. AO has had a free trial for years now, etc.

Don't forget I mostly only see my girlfrend at weekends.

That and band stuff and going out and getting up late hungover etc. having people staying at our house or going to stay with other friends... I don't think I've actually used my computer at the weekend since I've been at the new house - although I would have used it more if we'd had broadband probably. Ann has though!

That said - 5 hours free on a weekend day might be doable every few weeks but not on both of them. With my current diary I don't have a free day at the weekend until April at the moment. (1st and 2nd and 8th and 9th).

I'm mainly going to be using it in the evenings I think.

RRP here is £39.99

Amazon had it for £26.99.

Amazon.com has it at the standard US RRP.

I guess the problem here is that I could just have downloaded it from steampowered.com for $49.99 which is about £27!
