The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Tampa Bay fish things last night 7-5. Bunch of teams fighting for the bottom position, so competition is keen. Good beer was had. Grass is a very healthy green. Mmmm, hot dogs.

Nice shot, Funko.

Somehow I get the feeling those O'tjes are in a league with just three teams: O's, the Tampax warriors and the Jankers. They seem to be playing no one else.

They play something like 18 or 19 games against each team in the division, which consists of Tampa, Boston, jankers, some Canadian team and the O's. It is a lot.

it's the way american sports calendars are organized, with Conferences and Divisions

US are a big country, you play most games vs the teams geographically closest, i.e. your division. A bit less vs other division(s) in the same conference.
Just a few (if not just 1 home and 1 away) vs the other conference teams.

At least, this is the general concept in NBA.
not exactly sure about NFL, NHL, MLB

Yeah, but half of Canada moves to Florida during the winter months, so they have a natural affinity.

It is the same in the NHL. Though they recently changed the schedule so we finally play the other conference team 1 home 1 away each season...until recently we only played a hand full of games against the other conference.

Now, IIRC, it's 6 games vs divisional opponents, 4 games against conference opponents, 2 games against other conference opponents for a total of 82 games.

The stanley cup final is always the best West team vs the best East team.

The World Cup hasn't happened in many years.

The IIHF World Championships happen every year, and they are worthless. They occur during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, which means they only get young players trying to audition for the Olympic team or old players playing hockey before their time expires -- all on NHL teams that didn't make the playoffs. It's barely watched.

Canada won a couple years ago. It's a random winner, essentially, by virtue of everyone submitting hastily assembled teams of NHL dropouts in a competition no one cares about.

Even Sweden and the Czech Republic had won recently. Worthless.

The NHL players would like to make it a serious competition by making it every-other-year, then the NHL would allow a break so all players could participate (not just players from losing teams). But the IIHF balked at this since they want one every year for the TV contract money.

Of course. Until recently it was seriously called the Canada Cup, not World Cup.

For the NFL, you will play the 3 other teams in your division. All 4 of the teams in one of the other divisions in your conference and one of the divisions on the opposite conference. It alternates. The remaining 2 games are determined by what place you end up at last season.

Example:

The Bears (NFC North) will play the their division mates the Vikings, Packers, and Lions twice (home and away). Then they'll play all 4 of the NFC West teams and all 4 of the AFC North teams this season. Their other 2 games are against the Falcons and Eagles.

Ah, the Baltimore Orioles. You'll be shocked to hear that they didn't win their division this year, finishing a bit behind the Jankers. No team in the American League won fewer games than the lovable O's, and only two teams in baseball won fewer games. It was that four game win streak in the last four games of the year that let the O's avoid the ignomy of being the losingest team in baseball.

Well, there's always next year. Plus, I'm sure West Brom is doing well.

So when we're in SF we can go and see the Giants vs Phillies or Cardinals.

1. Should we?
2. Which one?
3. What's the beer like?
4. And the hot dogs?

Either team is good to see. SF is not so good. Cardinals have the best player in baseball now.

Hot dogs will probably suck. Beer should be quite good.

Yeah, it was very odd advice. I could see any number of people advising you to go to Oakland, but leaving out the warning about night games.
