yah

of course

it looked like a paypal email, except for a couple of mistakes

which I missed

fuck

at least I finally found a way to contact the bank, so my checkcard is canceled and stopped

it took a couple of hours (And I talked to a police man) before I found a number that allowed me to do that

I still need to cancel the account (I put in my account number and routing number in the fraudalent site)

no, but you do put your account number and routing number into paypal (I tihnk)

now I do have all the things that automatically pull from my bank account, which I will need to switch

I have the cash that is automatically put into my bank account, which I will need to switch

even if no money goes missing, this is going to be a huge pain in the ass

now I need to just wait for 3.5 more hours until the customer service people from the bank become available

if what they have is my name and address, my check card info, and my routing and account number

and my check card has been stopped

is there anything that they will be able to do right away?

they don't have my online passwords, or anything

I think so

if I wanted to

actually, I think that is what the department feels I should do (they think that my grades are too low for theory, and there are lots of experiment openings in high energy...)

Don't be too hard on yourself. The only reason they send those emails is that some 1 out of a 1000 or so will respond. Look at the bright side, you aren't the first, and at least you realised quickly.

Hopefully you'll be as quick at three mile explosion.

I don't know how your online bank account is set ("routing number"?), but if it's the usual PIN/TAN procedure, they can't make transactions.

Unless you gave them TANs also.

Can you close it and have the balance transferred back to you? That should stop any chicanery.

You should still be able to talk to them later at a security email address.

Do you have to enter a special transaction number (aka TAN) to finalise/sign a transaction on your account?

I generally just pull cash out of ATMs

and deposit checks in the bank (And have autodeposit with work)

and I pay credit cards with autopay (as well as cell phone)

and I pay utilities with Paypal

and I pay rent with checks (only thing I use checks for)

I am sure your bank has a theft protectiuon program. Things will be fine especially since you reported it all right away.

At 7 talk to the CS people, they will change your account info, order you new checks, etc.

It will probably cost you about 100$ total if there are charges going to your account.

Uh... best of luck. I'll be back when I figure out the best way to take the piss.

And in my experience banks tend to be fairly ok about clearing up this sort of mess. When I spotted on my statement that someone had bought something, apparently using my debit card number, I just had to report it to the police, and confirm that the purchase wasn't mine in order to get reimbursed. Reputations and all that are important to the bank it seems.

Excellent. I'll help pay his bail and/or medical bill.

Had a JM moment a few years ago when I thought I lost my wallet. Cancelled everything, then found the wallet exactly where I had looked for it ten times already. Its a royal pain in the ass Jon, but better than the alternative.

I'd advise checking to see that no new bank accounts or credit cards have been issued to you today.

A friend of mine did that. She cancelled everything then found her wallet in the pocket of the coat she'd been wearing the previous night.
