Luckily the process of amending the federal constitution is torturous...simple majorities are not enough.

The methods for the states however are varied and in general subject to popular vote.

I sat on the bus next to some rather loud American students yesterday. I found myself wondering if they were nice Americans or evil Americans.

I'm a little disheartened that some of you I have considered to be subtle minds are seemingly eager to draw a line down a piece of paper and place American's squarely in one column or another. We all know it isn't nearly that easy.
Yes, there has been a slight shift to conservatism of late, and yes, a congressional mandate is a bit troubling...but remember: many americans are gun owners, right AND left.
And we know how to use them.

You also think it's a contradiction to support socialized medicine and stem cell research.

And you're what most would consider an intelligent Bush voter.

Says a lot.

there are lots of reasons to vote for bush, being a gun toting nazi woman hater is just one. I imagine a lot of people feel its better the devil you know. I also think american politics is utterly different to ours, its personality politics so its hard for us to understand. We have party politics.

I did see an american talking about how they should split america in three and let democrats have the east and west coast, and republicans have the middle. Might work.

Actually Ned, the hateful and ignorant of CG have defined most of them, not V or myself.

These people call themselves intelligent and enlightened, and behave like crass and insulting morons.

I have nothing to be ashamed about, I would if I had such hateful and bigoted views as the mainstream here does though.

Not everybody though, just jerks who think Americans are downgraded by voting for the man they believe in, and closed minded jerks of that nature are never of much account, there is a reason we call them the lunitic left, and this thred is a stellar example of it.

Our recession so far really hasn't been that bad believe it or not. The last 2 rescessions fell much lower.

Not at all, but comments about how Americans are 'demeaned' by voting for a man who lowered the US tax burden to a workable level, finally took the fight to our enemies, and won his election in a fair way is just to fucking much.

Usally sane and nice people have for the last two days acted like complete assholes.

You think I would have ranted and raved if Bush lost?

I fully expected him to lose too.

A lot of the people have some serious problems with civility, this is why we had the problems the last time.

He didn't lower the tax burden to a workable level.

He took the fight to our enemies then promptly began ignoring them for fights he wanted to pick in other places.

He did win the second election fairly though.

He may have lowered the tax burden, but what money people may have saved then is being mostly used up due to the literally 20-30% increases of the prices of things like groceries and gas for thier cars and gas/electricity of thier houses and medical premiums and etc. Thus it's currently hard to see how much he may have helped.

I kinda agree Chris.

Certainly, Bush won the election and the popular vote without any lawyers this time. That IS a mandate from the people. Democracy is a scary scary thing like that.

I think a lot of people here have bought too heavily into the whole christian right side of your party though and are fully expecting a horde of bible waving lunatics to sweep across the earth despoiling everything in their path.

More realisitically, there's concern as to whether people like Kitty are going to have some of their options and personal freedoms sacrificed to appease the aforesaid extremists.

That makes people like you difficult to reconcile (and I don't give a damn what you believe personally, but I do remember you've never hit anyone here with a bible).

Perhaps a little breakdown of the Republican party is in order. Exactly who and where and how many of you form that part of it that is making everyone so uncomfortable here?

Are you sure? Maybe I missed it, but this time around all I've seen is ranting and raving in general (and plenty of it misguided), but nothing directed to anyone specifically on this site. Personally, I don't mind ranting and raving, even misguided ranting and raving. Until it becomes personal, it is easy enough to ignore.

First, gay rights will be protected, it takes 3/4 vote IN EACH state to amend the US Constitution, so that anti-gay marrige stuff isn't happening in the Constitution.

Second, mixing church and state remains illeagal, no GoPer wants that, no matter what others will have people believe.

Third, on taxes and wages, my firm rehired 2/3 of its workforce in the last year, Clinton's tax burden nearly put us out of business, without the tax relief, at least 40% of US medium companies would have folded up and blown away, and that's a fact.

Next, inflation isn't at 30% Kosh, it isn't even close to it.

Lastly, whether Kitty wants to admit it or not, Iraq was a US enemy, and a state Terrorist enabler, and now no longer is.

And a little perspective, 1100+ US service personel have given their lives in Iraq, in the same period, 66,000 people were killed in traffic acidents in the USA. You have a better chance of being hit by a truck than a soldier has of being killed in Iraq.

This is absolutely bullshit. Think about it as a percentage.

How many soldiers are in Iraq?

How many people travel by vehicle in the US?

I guarantee you the chance of being killed as a soldier in Iraq is far higher.

Republican logic at work...no wonder Bush won.

Chris, there are 300M people in the U.S, of which 66000 is about .005%.

For 1000 casualties to be .001%, you'd need 10M soliders in Iraq.

Damn. Beat me to it while I looked up our troop numbers.

114,000 US personnel

By those numbers 3 million people died from car accidents since we illegally invaded Iraq.

Well the overall inflation would take into account everything. Electronics doesn't seem to be going up much for example. There are only small increases and even decreases in various other things too. That said, gas prices here have gone up probably about 20% here in the past couple of years. The increase in gas prices leads to the increase of transportation costs which leads to the increase in day to day goods' prices. The cost of many things at the grocery store particularilly dairy products has really gone up. A gallon of milk in our area is 70-80 cents more than before the Iraq War for example. Ditto for things like ice cream, juice, bread, and cereal. Every the cheapie special things like Kool-Aid and Raman noodles are up like a dime a package.

Almost three million have served Ned, people forget to add rotation rate.

Its a slight exageration, but the point is made, it isn't as hazardous as people make it out to be, and far from a disaster, just ask the guys there, I talk to several every day.

It said it could not find an OPPERATIONAL connection TO 9/11, HOWEVER, it did find numerous DIRECT links between Saddam, Al Qaeda as well as Palestian terror organizations.

Koshko: Does the U.S have anything like the CPI (Consumer Price Index) in New Zealand?

It's a measure of goods and services that directly affect people's day to day lives, and it's a better measure of 'real' inflation than looking at the simple number for the economy as a whole.

Chris: Yeah that helps a bit. Iraq is still scary as hell, though, and I over time I've come to think that the decision to go there when the threat was so indirect compared to the direct threat from the terrorists was less than ideal.

Then we would have to include the numbers of every person who passed through the united states in that same time period to have an accurate comparison.

Any idea how many more hundreds of millions that was?

Like I said, this is basic statistics. (Edit by which I mean if you want accurate stats that you can compare. You can make up all kinds of fake skewed studies if you want, but if you want to do it right, there is only one way).

People have short memories Ned, they fail to remember that the US could not keep a largew army sitting in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia forever, which was the way Saddam was being contained. They also seem to have forgotten that Iraq only reluctently allowed inspectors, and only because there was an army nearby.

The worst part of this memory loss is that Saddam had found a way around the sanctions, and they were, in fact, collapsing. The Dulfer report was very clear that no weapons were in Iraq, but it also was clear about something else:
Saddam was fully prepared to begin mass production of chemical and biological agents the minute sanctions vanished.

I had a really good idea the other night at three am....why instead of elections, don't we just appoint leaders of our parties then let them all loose in parliament to work things out. then we'd all be represented.
