England v New Zealand

New Zealand off to a good start. 0-47, with debutant opener (as in first time opening the batting ina test match, not as in debutant player) Stephen Fleming 30*.

Well, NZ 5/284 after day 1. Honours shared so far I'd say.

Its not a great pitch for batting or bowling so I'd agree. Its about PAR.

I went downstairs to watch when he was on 88, and the next 40 minutes was truly gritty stuff. How he didn't get out when he edged onto his stumps I don't know. Still, up until that point he'd been chanceless, an excellent knock.

They can't drop him now. Bye-bye Nasser...

Or even. yeah but I think that means Vaugh has to move to 4 or 5. I have always fancied Thorpe as a better 4 than 5 anyway.

Daily score is Eng: 1 1/2 v 1/2 NZ

I'd say that the balance is just NZ way but not enough to award the whole day.

Whatya think Ned?

Scotland v New Zealand would be more likely to be on that topic.

Either:

Someone will be a hero and win the day (Martin, Vetorri, or one of the random new English batsmen who are so good and we've never heard of down here).

Or:

It will be a good contest up until halfway through the second session, at which point England will just bat for the red ink or Fleming will set a field like it's 1908 and he has all summer to play.

Personally, I really want Vettori to do the job. He's a fantastic player going through a bit of a drought right now, it would swing the series seriously in our favour if he could find his best form.

Just finsihed watching the highlights (i was working this afternoon and missed the last two sessions). I'm afraid I have to award today to NZ but I'm still confident they don't have the bowling to win the match. Its either going to be a draw or England will win.

Flemming is betting that the pitch will become too difficult to play on. That would balance our lack of attack.

Hmm, 282 to win on the last innings of the match. I'd say it's unlikely that England will win, based on history and nothing else however.

Someone ought to have told Nasser that if he was planning to run out the person who is about to take his place in order to save it, it might have been useful to do that before he had a match aggregate of 195...

I think we'd be looking at a 7pm finish. Not going to bad at the mo. 220-3. Hussain on 58 and Thorpe on 36.

sounds like its all over then. 233-3 now. Should be able to score 50 runs before stumps. Even if stumps is 6pm then you would still fancy england to do it,

I don't know very much about cricket but aren't New Zealand one of the little teams that we are supposed to beat easily?

And this was a home test, at Lords?

While Sir Richard Hadlee was still playing, NZ were a pretty tough team to beat.
