Americans as individuals I usually find to be charming and friendly

as a collective though they can be conservative, warmongering, intransigent, arrogant and ignorant.

Its a great shame that some British people see fit to berate American individuals for the failings of their country. Not so long ago it was us storming round the world invading countries and telling people how to live, but I'm buggered if I'd take the blame for it personally.

Hedonistic. I'm not sure that has the kind of positive connotations a tourism board should look for.

Sad to hear there are so many intolerant arseholes here. I feel like I should apologise for them.
Yes it is indeed sad when some people can't see past their prejudices and attack the representatives of the US...

BUT, if you read between the lines of the stories of the Americans there - honest, they're not that bad... I think some people are feeling overly sensitive, or taking things personally. Seriously, if those stories are the best Anti-American stories anyone can come up with for however long this story has been running, you should be happy!

Yes, there is the odd arsehole or two over here, like 'day bag man' (though I actually doubt that story is real after the bit about the US embassy) but none of the stories talk about being threatened with violence for example.

I mean take me for example, to a certain group of hyper-sensitive US types I am the incarnation of the Anti-American Anti-Christ (apparently). But I am not, actually. I am merely against many of the policies of the US govt - not the people themselves...

One only has to ask my American girlfriend.

BTW, since she has been in the UK for the last six years no one has been nasty to her purely for being an American citizen...

having lived in wales as an english person, I think the welsh have a MASSIVE chip on their shoulder about being persecuted by the english, and most of the english actually couldnt give a toss.

I loved wales, and the welsh (apart from their collective chips)

But then I'm half scottish, so maybe its a celtic thing

I think ignoring them only makes them angrier.

Instead we should really encourage the diversity that their culture provides and make every effort to learn a few words of Welsh to show off whenever we go to Wales.

It's WORSE than that!!!

In Wales if you go to an Indian Restaurant, they have a menu side order called 'half/half' - which is a side plate of half rice and half chips!

Well I think of myself as Scottish, but I'm guessing a few SCots would take issue with that seeing as I was born and raised in england

I don't understand how there is the big difference between England and Wales

I mean you guys have been basically united for 100s of years

but there is more of a difference than there is between states here in the US or between immegrants who have been here 3 generations

See the country of Texas for a perfect example. OR Quebec in Canada.

Being "united" does not make one perfect neighbours.

I think of myself as a human from Earth. I don't have a feeling of national identity. Probably because I don't follow sport and therefore feel no need to wave flags or tell anyone about my "national pride". I was born in France and my mother is Scottish so I guess you could call me a European if you have to label me.
