Bruce Springsteen- Nebraska

Why is it that the Film forum has discussions on recently bought novels but we don't talk about recently purchased albums, like, ever? Well, today I bought three albums, two of which I have to shut up about for LWP5 reasons and Nebraska.

I'm surprised what a good album it is, really- although "Atlantic City" was one of my fav tracks on the Best Of, I didn't think the rest would hold such a high quality considering the variability of some of his other albums. Great lyrics (possibly his best ones ever, and very much in style) accompanied by a surprisingly rootsy sound for the time period (and the artist concerned!), although he does sneak in the glockenspeil occasionally. Very bitter as well, which is sometimes nice. I even liked "State Trooper", even though Laz claims it's good.

I didn't know they made albums like that in 1982.

Home recording on a cheap 4-track tends to bypass antiseptic 1980's production values.

Nebraska is a brilliant album.

Any song that opens with the line "Well they blew up the chicken man" is ok by me.

Had another run-though now and it's got that stop-everything-else-you-are-doing-and-just-listen feel that I rarely get off albums during the first few listens. I think it might just be a very good album indeed...

I bought the Tribute album of Nebraska, with such artists as Ani D'franco, Hank III, Son Volt.

Ani's version of used car was brilliant.

Jay: Shit, everyone knows that. Tell me something else.

Nebraska was great. I heard at the time that it was never intended as an album; Bruce just sent in self recorded demo tracks to his record company intending to add production and more arranging in the studio.

Sadly I got it when it came out in the '80s in cheap pre-recorded cassette that has deteriorated over the years.

Bruce is playing in town tomorrow night. I'd like to see him but at $100 a pop, I have better uses for my entertainment money.

Nebraska definitely is one of Bruce's best albums if not the best.
