Web Design

I'm trying to do a little freelance webdesign in my spare time. Basically just building little 5 page basic sites as I wouldn't know where to start building ecommerce sites. I've got LOADS to still learn and I don't think I ever will be 'very good' at it as I'm not really very artistic.

I just wondered if anyone could provide some critique for www.mjh-design.com

Content-wise I've not got much to put in at the moment as I've not really got any decent stuff I can showcase.

It's a good design, though I don't like the light blue titles in the main body. Blends in a little too well. And maybe try to change the overall background color on the page. Something to make your outlined text area on the page really jump out.

That's great. I understand what you mean now, looking at other sites, the background tends to be white on black or black on white. There is hardly any contrast between my background and foreground.

I'll have a play around when I get home.

Hmm another thing I've noticed is my use of randomised capital lettering on the first page and it is a pet hate of mine.

Always, always put a back button at the bottom of every page. It is bad form to have to use your browser's back button. Apparently.

Are you sure you need the exact same navigation bar on the left and at the top? Maybe one that could be moved by clicking an arrow would be awesome.....

Sorry, it looks cool really. good frames.

I thought the same thing in regards to navigation. I looked at loads of sites and came to the conclusion that generally it's ok to have a horizontal and vertical navigation system. Having one that moves using an arrow button would be diving into the realms of javascript and my java is very, very rusty - more titanic rusty.

I'm not too sure about a back button as every page on the site can be accessed using the same menu system so I don't think it would be much of an advantage.

Thanks for the opinions though they REALLY are appreciated. I don't want to be the kind of arsehole to say critque my site then get all defensive when anyone says anything

No, it's all good. Your site is fine for it's size (apart from the double navigation thing). Back buttons probably wouldn't be of use for you, but maybe when it gets bigger...

I think you only need double navigation when you have one bar as an overview of sections and then another for navigating pages within that section.

As previously mentioned, there's not enough contrast between text and background which makes it quite hard to read.

Other than that it's fine as a design.

Sadly, I never get lucky.

Probably because I'm fat, ugly, and smelly. Oh and my personality sucks. Can't leave that one out.

It's hard to judge your own work. Especially as I'm working in 1680 X 1050 resolution on a TFT screen. I noticed this when I was looking on a computer screen at work and the colours were no where near as sharp.

Bollocks. Why replicate functionality that already exists!

Matt site looks nice, but you might want to look at not doing it in tables. I guess that's more aesthetic really but would be a good idea to learn more css.

Would mean the page would use half the code as you currently have, and the layout and design would be much easier to update and replace in the future. As well as being able to easily produce printable and pda/mobile versions etc.

Thanks Nav. I have tried a few layouts in CSS and I must admit I've not quite got to grips with it yet. I think I need to go thorugh some more tutorials and look at more example coding.

Looks good Matt.

I'd agree with Nills about the redundant navigation, or if you keep both, I'd be tempted to make the sidebar a bit narrower. Just being picky though - it's good.

Made some more tweeks and fixed an error with everything being centred in IE. Looks like I may have a few clients lined up too. Yay!

Just completed my second web project - currentely added to my portfolio.

Everything is XHTML Strict validated and CSS is too. I'm beginning to get the hang of this now.

Hmm... 2nd, 3rd and 4th all line up, just the first one is slightly to the left.

The rest looks very good indeed, I think. Maybe a couple of flash anims to liven it up a little?

This is just a feature of Firefox removing the scrollbar when it's not necessary. It's not too much of an issue in my eyes.

I'm not too sure what Cruddy means though. All pages line up, except the 'Credits' page due to the scroll bar. I've tested this from 800 * 600 -> 1600 * 1200 in Firefox, IE, Opera and Safari.
