Cool A Solar Filament Lifts Off

Quote:
Hot gas frequently erupts from the Sun. One such eruption produced the glowing filament pictured above, which was captured in 2000 July by the Earth-orbiting TRACE satellite. The filament, although small compared to the overall size of the Sun, measures over 100,000 kilometers in height, so that the entire Earth could easily fit into its outstretched arms. Gas in the filament is funneled by the complex and changing magnetic field of the Sun. After lifting off from the Sun's surface, most of the filamentary gas will eventually fall back. More powerful solar eruptions emit particles that reach the Earth and can disrupt manmade satellites. The cause and nature of solar eruptions are the topic of much research.

What was your old name? And I liked them and used to say so, but people told me that the custom was to complain about them. Now other people seem to say that they like them. And is zmama new? Or what was her old name?

I don't realy play the own goal game. You're firing at an empty net. Although that was not a rhetorical question anyway, which means (I think) you shouldn't kick the ball.

Wrong.

If it is a rhetorical question then he wouldn't be allowed to own goal you; he'd be "offside"

No, like Lucifer, falling from the heavens, lashing out one last time to trick man into eating the forbidden apple and getting banned from Eden.

Wait I thought that was the whole point of it. That a normal question looking for info is fine. But one where you know the answer (rhetorical) gets gigged?

One where you know the answer but are not using the question as a rhetorical device can be own goaled (since then you are attempting a 100-0).

A rhetorical question cannot be own goaled and any own goal attempt can be declared offside.

A question which you actually do not know the answer to should not be own goaled either, however the own goal may simply be inserted for protection from 100-0 attempts if the responder is unsure as to the intentions of the questioner.

A rhetorical question is identified by the purpose for which it is asked, i.e. rhetoric.

If I am a politician running on a platform of cracking down on child pornography and I say: "Do you want to continue to see children exploited for the sick purposes of a few deviants?" then that is a rhetorical question.

If I'm on CG and ask you who the HARDMAN is, then it's not a rhetorical question (even though I know the answer). It's a 100-0 attempt.

Still don't see the difference. Where are you are changes whether the question is rhetorical? This stuff is all here anyhow. And that still sounds silly about owngoaling a legit question. there should be some penalty for that.

I don't see how you don't see the difference:

A rhetorical question is asked to persuade somebody into a certain viewpoint.

A question that can be own goaled is asked to get the person to answer.

Could you give me an example of a rhetorical question that was not own goaled? I always thought the whole point of the own goal game was an annoyance at the (in some sense) falseness inherent in asking a question that one knows the answer to (a rhetorical question).

And I would not limit rhetorical questions to ones that are for purpose of debate. They include situations of irony.

Like a lot of these APOD photos it's been taken digitally and then enhanced and coloured to make it look pretty. I believe that is actually a picture of UV band light which is why the surface looks black... aha

Quote:
These images are false color pictures of ultraviolet light emitted by the hot gas that comprises the coronal loops. Ultraviolet light is invisible to the human eye, but detectable by the special instruments on board TRACE. White represents the brightest ultraviolet light.
So, basically it is computer generated, which is why it looks like it is. The underlying picture is of something that's really there but it doesn't really look like that, in fact it's something we humans wouldn't be able to see.
