14-year-old Caol Ila, finished in Tokaji barrels. I am drowning in my own drool.

Ooh yum!

I'm a bit Islay whisky aficionado myself (Laphroaig @home!) and definitely a fan of Caol Ila - also quite partial to the odd snifter of Tokaji - so basically a win win all round!

Have you tried this? http://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies...bottle-whisky/

"Black Bottle is a blended Scotch featuring a proportion of whisky from almost every distillery on Islay, a marked blend with plenty of character."

I was given a bottle a little while back and haven't found an occasion to open it yet, looking forward to it though.

This smacks of novelty, but gotta be worth a snifter or two.

I love the different barrel finish stuff.

One day, when I'm feeling rich, I'm going to get myself a bottle of this:

Hmm, for some of their malts they seem to be offering a 3cl sample facility. However it works out cheaper if you bought a bottle's worth in samples!? wtf?

Is it a peated whisky? Let me know how it tastes, funko! If it's any good, I'll try to get one here.

I only recently discovered Gordon & MacPhail (brilliant name!!!). I emptied another finish from them during the holidays, which tasted great.

It's weird. Any time I try and drink whiskey (scotch or bourbon varieties) neat, all I can taste is a smell (cause taste is 2/3 smell) that I can only describe as akin to methylated spirits!

Now imagine me going to Japan for my ex's cousin's wedding to a Japanese girl. Imagine me sitting down at a table with both fathers and the Japanese father pulling out a bottle of 12 year old suntori scotch! Pouring it over a little ice and passing me half a glass. Imagine me trying not to grimace as I swallowed the first mouthful.

Fortunately, the metho effect seems to dissipate somewhat after a few sips, so it got better. Though not a lot. And I had to sit through about a glass and a half all up of neat scotch. An experience I will never forget!

Wow...

well, it's very different. It is subtly peaty, smoky and earthy, it's very dark. Really rich and sweet. You can really taste the Tokaji. I love it. I've had a glenmorangie before that was aged in Sauternes wood and that was much lighter and more subtle. This kind of smashes you in the face with Tokaji, and the whisky is a bit more in the background. Certainly won't be to everyones taste!

Only 492 bottles... you probably should get one if you want one!

I would like to know who made the Scots the end all of whisky(ey) perfection?
I object to the calcified-Common Market-Anglophile-neocolonial prejudice of that reified these, although often delightful, constantly over-rated spirits. They have been propped up on impossibly high pedestals. So blah blah blah.:P

It's similar to France with wine. Partly they are very good, partly that are in great demand because people recognise and trust them. people buy what they know and trust

Scotch doesn't age once bottled, so it was cask aged 42 years and bottled 2 years ago. Want us to bottle you?

Well some claim it;'s the purity of the water... Then again the Japanese pride themselves on the purity of their water, so maybe that's your answer

Just had a look at the registration stuff... 1250 or 1750 depending if you get a Bourbon or Sherry cask. 1750 is 250 litres. 357 bottles!

"It's different" is not much of a verdict But it sounds interestingly enough for me to go and see if I can get one here. I'm not much into the highly peated stuff, but maybe this will win me over.

That's an interesting idea, buying a barrel of whiskey. Presumably you decide when you want to bottle it? Probably not much left in the barrel after 42 years!

Yes indeed, you can have a sample each year to determine when to bottle it, and you don't have to bottle it all in one go.
I'm sure part of the reason really old whisky is so expensive is because most of it has evaporated!
