I'm just reacting to the comments about usage of "couple". Bottom line, if you use couple to mean "a few", you will NOT appear more nuanced or language-savvy. The reverse will be true."
-----------------------

I'm discussing the word, now, Colon. Its nuances and shades of meaning and connotations and all that. Capiche?

If you tell someone there are "a couple reporters at the door" and they go to look and find three (or four), they will think you misused the word. Especially if they are well-educated. The word has a looser feel to it than "two". Especially in the context of time...(or alcohol! ). But using it as a synonym for few, will make you appear less correct. You can do some research on it, if you want to. I think that I am giving you the straight scoop. I do have a bit better feel for spoken English than you do, although I give you all the credit in the world for your mastery of it. Much better than my French or Dutch (oh heck...Flemish! )

And if some highbrow character thinks less of me because I use "a couple" as a synonym of "a few", he can sod off.

If you misuse it in the manner that I described, you will get some odd looks. Certainly among my peer group and family. But I will yield to your superior experience at English conversation. (And when was the last time you visited to chat with the locals? At least Colon has endured the rigors of shmoozing with the 'necks in Virginia Highlands.)

Let's have a poll among native speakers what "a couple reporters at the door" means in casual conversation. I think I've heard it used in the "some/several" sense at seminars etc, and it fits perfectly well with "paar".

(of course in written german we can make the exact destinction by use of "paar" vs "Paar", which you poor anglos do not have )

Well Lefty, Darlin and Mike all seem to be in my camp. And we grew up speaking the language. But of course you've been to some seminars...so maybe you have a better feel for English word nuances than I do.

Mike ? Where ?

Also it's not about word nuances per se, but what nuances are considered a misuse of a word. "Misuse" looks way too strong for me... but if you want a pissing match about language...

"Must be the lawyer inside of you showing up."

This was not not a challenge, even if responding to someone else?
And, besides, you disagreed with Darlin.

Sensitivity has nothing to do with it, only bloodlust. Items mentioned above only influence target selection, not initiating the activity.

Definition #1 of curmudgeon is disagreeable old man.

Ok, no offense, but what's up with all the seriousness here lately? First George who feels the urge to crusade against the wrong use of the word "couple" and now Mr Disagreeable Old Man who has the urge to vent its bitterness towards Europeans for whatever reason.

That lawyer comment towards Darlin was an insider joke. In case you hadnt noticed, 90% of the posts here consist of irony, mockery and insider jokes. The other 10% perhaps reserved for personal issues. That's why I come here and that's why I'm tired of this thread.

There is nothing serious in my posts in this thread, only entertainment, some of it at your expense, ces't la vie. I come here because I am permitted to indulge, with in some vauge limits, my tastes for trolling, flamming, and cruel humor and entertainment, in a millieu where it is accepted and even expected by the community, which tastes are more curtailed at moderated sites. Whatever I may notice about the intent of your posts will not prevent me from using them to further my entertainment.

I think the problem works both ways. The problem lies with classifying people by gender. Yes, there are prevalent character trends to certain sexes, but the major aspect in determining an individual's behaviour is quite individualistic. You have to get to know an individual. We all have our idiosyncrasies.

I'd like to point out that if I saw two reporters outside the front door, I would say, "two". If I saw three, I would say, "three". If I saw more than I could count in one glance, I would say, "a bunch". I would say, "a couple" if part of my view was obscured and I wasn't sure of the exact number, but was pretty sure it wasn't very many.

1st, i was mad at the time i posted the original part of this thread, and i took it out on the male gender as a whole. My appologies for doing that.
2nd, half the stuff in this thread dont even apply to what i was talking about in the first place, which is fine and expected
3rd, the menion of a Lawyer was made in reference to ME, as i had confided to Colon via pm that i'd like to be a lawyer one day.

does that clear it all up?
