ACOL: Reconstructing the History

Dear Counterglow,

As this image suggests, it has been a while (nearly 10 years, in fact) since I last posted on this forum.

http://i.imgur.com/4F8LD.png

Much has changed in the intervening years, and here's the story of what led me back here. I was randomly browsing the internet when I remembered the ACOL forums, a place where I spent a lot of time posting before 2001. I decided to take a trip down memory lane and try to find some of my old posts. In doing so, I learned that the forums have been offline for quite some time. I then tried to reconstruct what happened, and why ACOL flamed out so spectacularly.

My main motivation was to try to dig up some of my old posts (perhaps for nostalgia's sake). Because www.planetacol.com is now defunct, I tried using the Way Back Machine. As you can see (http://web.archive.org/*/http://www.planetacol.com), it only goes until January 2001. The other unfortunate thing is that you can click into the forums and see the post headlines, but you cannot see the contents of the post. I then had this hazy memory that ACOL was at another URL before switching to the PlanetACOL one. I would try to use Way Back Machine on that URL, but I do not remember what it was. Does anyone else know?

Below are a few links that recreate some of the story what occurred.

Is ACOLKitty's current 41 day ban too harsh? (May 2001): http://test.that incredibly nerdy civ site.net/showthread....-ban-too-harsh

ACOL banned MtG (June 2001): http://test.that incredibly nerdy civ site.net/showthread....COL-banned-MtG

AnnC shut the music forum on ACOL (November 2001): http://www.counterglow.com/forum/showthread.php?t=223

Veracitas! (December 2001): http://counterglow.com/forum/showthread.php?t=800

PlanetACOL (2005): http://that incredibly nerdy civ site.net/showthread.php/143124-PlanetACOL?s=

History of ACOL (2006): http://that incredibly nerdy civ site.net/archive/index.php/t-156564.html

Thanks for humoring my trip down memory lane.

I just looked in the glossary - was it alpha.owo that you were thinking of?

Noisy,

Thanks for the reply. I think alpha.owo was the original, Firaxis-sponsored forum. Am I right?

I think after this place started up ACOL pretty much became a PBEM hookup and communication site. The off topic flat out died.

I remember sitting in a pub in London in late summer/early autumn 2001 talking to Aredhran Keith, RC Keith and Nav Keith about how AnnC was melting down and we should start our own site.

Was shortly after Rachel had been over (which was September 2001, because 9/11 happened when she was here).

And then, the mysterious anonymous The Management started this place, so we didn't have to bother. Which was nice.

@Noisy Thanks for the link. That's super helpful.

@Tau Ceti That's the one! Unfortunately, Wayback Machine does not have a lot in the way of archived material for www.an-identity.com. And, most unfortunately, you cannot seem to click into the posts. This is the best I could find: http://bit.ly/ipdGuR

@Funko Thanks for sharing the story. Looking at this Counterglow member list from a long time back (http://bit.ly/lheLvZ), it looks like many (though not all) the members came here. It's a shame the community broke over such petty matters that no one remembers anymore.

the bulk of it just relocated rather than break up, ACOL just became unevenly and overmoderated

A lot of good old threads did vanish, but we can always make new pointless ones.

I don't recall a "break up" either. It just got to the point where it wasn't fun anymore. This ain't real life, it's not a marriage... if it gets to not be fun ...is time to move on!

Definitely

Great comeback, Veracitas!
I'll dig in my PBEM archives, I'm sure we played some together. But I can't recall whether we also shared some fiery argument in the forums
Didn't you use to keep some strategy articles "academy" page somewhere?
or were they diaries for some epic PBEM in narrative form?

I'll tuck back into your time capsule, now

BTW, wasn't it Asian Flu [aka Justin] who started ACOL as a PBEM management site alternative to alpha.owo and the Poly PBEM forum, before AnnC took over?
or wasi it something else?

Red should definitely remember it

That's correct.

When he handed over to AnnC she was quite hands off too... then she got more involved in off topic, there was a clash of personalities with some people and it turned out she was quite easy to wind up.

Well there are some threads in the games in progress forum where you can still see the posts. Unfortunately they are not much interesting, it's a bunch of "turn sent" ones.

Oddly enough I don't think I've ever posted (or even lurked) the random chat forum. I remember many discussions in the ontopic fora tho

so MtG asked AnnC for jimmytrick to be banned "threatening" they'd have both left ACOL otherwise
can't recall now whether AnnC refused, or instead complied but other posters protested as no one had ever been banned before so she later lifted it

anyway, I think that was what started the huge AnnC-MtG argument (as far as I could realise, I admit I've never been the "smartest" forum member)
IIRC they began arguing whether there had been or not moderation precedents justifying the ban (in simpler words something like: "in a similar situation sometimes ago you did/didn't ban the offender" - "it wasn't actually the same, and I was right to behave one way in that case and another way now"...)
AnnC reproached MtG that what he reported about moderation and ban precedents in ACOL to support his PoV in the argument was incorrect, and there it all got out of control

did I miss or misrecall something?

BTW, why don't we open a POKER FORUM here at CG????

I can so barely remember any of that stuff. It's all a hazy blur to me now. I have a feeling that I may not even have been active on ACOL by that stage. I know I took a few months to go to CG. Mike invited me when it opened but I wasn't interested at the time.

Why, oh why did I change my mind those few months later? Everyone would have been much happier otherwise.
