If you want to know how that beautiful method of play is done properly see Jack Charlton's Irish squad in the '94 World Cup.

Sorry to be boringly on-topic, but does anyone else think Solari's claim, that the "English media intrusion" put him off, was just a nice excuse for him to duck out without looking greedy when he realised his wage demands werent going to be met?

Well... I nearly posted about that the other day. Whatever his offer was, it'd be much more than he's getting with Portugal, so I don't think that the 'greedy wage demands' angle has any weight to it at all.

Some people have been saying that the media pressure for the Brazil manager is just as intense.

But one thing I read was that Scolari didn't mind that because the pressure and stories were about football matters. The tabloids here were already coming out with stories like a comparison between Scolari's wife and Sven's bird Nancy thingy and it was the level of intrusion into his personal life that he hadn't appreciated.

(about WC 94)

I remember the game against Italy very clearly, was in the UK, saw in a garden during a BBQ in Cambridge, everybody got totally plastered.

Glorious memory, but what a crappy game

Yep. Crouch and Owen could be the classic big man little man combo.

Downing is scarcely a nobody. He's a genuine emerging star.

Niall Quinn's international career largely revolved around his ability to cause an interesting ricochet off his face.

that would carry clout if said by a non englishman, or if any non englishman had noticed him in big matches, otherwise I just revert to my comment on the brit press spinning any half decent youngster playing a few good matches against second rate teams.

I watched his stats for this season and some comments. An attacking winger he scored 1 (out of apparently 41 shots on goal, only 15 of which were actually on target!) and had 4 assists in 24 games (while he is credited with a "deadly cross"). Not what I call particularly stunning, and certainly nothing to indicate he would be an asset on the big stage.

Footballing stats can be misleading, I remember talking to K_G about that in relation to fantasy football and how it doesn't always reward the best players.

He's had a bit of an injury hit season and has only just hit his best form. He had 3 assists in their UEFA cup semi-final alone.
