Help settle an arguement...

I've been bored at work a lot lately since they blocked this place, and I've been baaaad. I looked at macs... and thought they're awesome!!!!! Everyone I've asked so far is telling me that I shouldn't go and spend that sort of money on a mac when I could get a 'proper computer 5 times over' instead, and they don't like my reasoning "It's so pretty!!! And it's got a terrabite!!! A terrabite!!!" So they're all trying to talk me out of it, but I'm literally this close to buying one...

This is the shiny things I been looking at

Any thoughts?

Holy shit that's expensive! Honestly alsie, don't buy one of the overpriced pieces of turd. They're for sandal-wearing fuckwits who don't know the value of money...seriously. Apple is one of the worst cases of branding I've ever come across. They try and give this whiter than white image. Well we all see that their halo is slipping in recent years.

Don't do it, an utter rip-off!

Macs are for rich elitists who don't know what computers are really for and think iTunes will somehow run better if only their computer also has an apple on it and costs twice as much.

Save yourself the money. An extra thousand bucks is worth a hell of a lot more than looking like a brand whore.

The terrabyte one is 1799?

Here's an awesome spec uber gaming machine for half the price:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159367

although you'd need a nice 24" monitor.

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143848

I would rather have that and 700.

ok Funki sent me a link to this as i think he wants me to answer it cos he knows this is something I rant on about

What do you buy when you buy a Mac is the question you have to ask yourself. in the old days it was non standard system that was very specific and ran mac os that was specificly written of the mac

This is no longer true, now mac are intel based pc's the big claim from Apple now is that Mac can run windows and while this is true the spec of the average mac is far below an average pc so yes it runs windows badly. the mac os is actually FreeBSD dressed up a little. and therefore isn't really that different to Linux. so what do you get that you wouldn't get with a dual boot Windows/Linux PC well a nice shiny case and a apple logo is the answer

what do you get with a Windows/linux PC compaired to a mac, well raw power is the simple answer, also cheaper parts and more options on hardware for half the price

if you really want a flash case buy a sony, more expensive than other brands but cheaper than a mac

I don't need it for anything special, it'd mainly be for watching movies, uploading pics, going on the net, playing the ocassional game. So all that awesome software it has for people who know what they're doing will sit there doing nothing.

There is absolutely no need to get a Mac. Especially when it's going to cost you twice as much.

It's standard in a lot of creative businesses and (arguably) runs Adobe and Quark products better.

I've used both systems myself and don't mind either. Since the performance of a PC is so much better for the price in general, I'd definitely go for that though, unless funds are unlimited.

there are never any hardware conflicts and half as many crashes with macs, which makes them desirable for live use. you won't see many pc laptops on a stage in front of thousands of people.

you'll also find them in many graphics/media/music businesses because they are fashionable and familiar to media types. they are a kind of creative industry standard and music/creative software is often made for macs/mac hardware and then ported over to pc. for example, protools doesn't really work very well on pc.

other than that, they are very expensive for what they do. if you aren't using them for music or to show off, get a pc.

btw, i've got macbook and i run windows xp on it. i won't be getting another mac. i'll be getting a quad laptop running windows 7. when that's affordable.

no, creative music software such as protools and logic are created for macs. pc versions won't work on most pcs and the ones they do work on you'll get half as many audio tracks and lots of crashes.

pcs have been too unstable to risk running a live concert or audiovisual event. that's true i'm afraid - and i'm a pc person. i only have a mac for some audio applications, most of the time i run it as a pc.

windows 7 might change all this though, that seems to be as solid as a mac.

MacOS X 10.5.7 crashes more on me than Vista or Windows 7 betas.

When I updated to 10.5.4, it took away my clock in the top right even though clock was enabled. I did lots of googling before I found some weird hack to get it back.

Fucking ridiculous.

Protein is a proper "pro" (excuse the word) but I can vouch for the stability of Macs in recording and having sensible and stable software for music.

Ironically (or not, Alanis) things got better when they started building them on Intel chips - Universal Binary really works with plugins etc and now the range is there.
