yeah, when I heard about teh Dark Brotherhood I started making some story in my head about why I would seek them out to get vengeance against some lord or something

than I decided that would be a pretty boring character (too usual for these sort of things, I think)

actually, when the game started I was thinking that I wanted to be a rabble rouser, intending to overthrow the empire (and make it a democracy)

right now, I am thinking that might be a bad idea (I am thinking the emperor is needed to defend the nation ro something), so my character is conflicted (and I might change my concept to something more easily played)

Got it. Its purty, and fun.

I probably spent an hour messing with the facemaker just because it was cool - you can really mess up your face if you like

custom class: destruction, restoration, light armor, blade, speechcraft, mercantile, and either block or security... can't remember which

lockpick and speechcraft minigames are nice additions, you can skip lockpick and just go based on skill if it bores you

I have one irritating quest where I'm trying to find someone who stole a painting, and all but one of the suspects told me it was raining the night the painting was stolen. So I know who's lying, but not whether they're lying to cover for stealing the painting...

Died numerous times trying to defend some drunk's farm and two sons from rampaging goblinish guys, but boy was it fun! He lost a son, but that's what happens when you let your kid grow up to be a loudmouth, aggressive, glory hound. Jerk didn't pay me a dime, just started crying "it should have been me!"
If he'd got off his drunk butt and gone with me, no one would have died.

Just now realized I'd been running around working on those 2 quests with a nasty disease from a dog/wolf bite, have to do something about that when I get home.

Bethesda are cool.

Getting an Xbox 360, a good HDTV, and Oblivion will cost $2200.

Game is nice. Hate the combat system controls though. I can see why people are saying it is a console port.

Blocking sucks, I must say. I'd prefer the old passive block from Morrowind. Damn it's purty though.

Yowzah, 19" Samsung LCD for C$450 (C$225 off).

I can use that with an Xbox 360, right (it does DVI)?

beautiful game
I think I'm a bit crap though, I played about 15 hours, and got only to level 4, with a pushover of a character (still running away when there is more than one zombie). I don't think I'm optimizing the level system (the whole morrowind system is new to me)

It's very different from traditional RPGs, because it's designed for a computer instead of pens and paper. They can have a very powerful skill system that's intuitive and sensible, with loads of complex equations in the background for calculating damage and stuff. It's the only system (other than d20) that I like for RPGs.

There's really only one thing you have to keep in mind: play to your strengths. Keep practising what you're good at, and you'll get better at it; and don't try to do things you're not good at. If you're good at sneaking, but not at fighting, then sneak, don't fight.

http://www.oblivionportal.com/info/races.php

Don't be a high elf. They take extra damage from fire and half the game seems to use fire. I played around with one to learn the game and its not worth the 100 magika.

I am playing a Breton with a custom class (slight mod of spell blade, no blocking)

The 50 point resist magika is very nice.

Would be interesting to try a breton born under the one sign that gives you 50% absorb spell power but no magika regen.

If it works the way I think you would take 25% damage and gain magika whenever you get hit with a spell.

Could make a nice melee character with only a little restoration magic for healing.

You can also find a complete list of perks here or a bit of a summary about the character creation here

The Atronach birthsign was a powerhouse in Morrowind but I feel it's more balanced now. Real time magicka generation is very good, I'm playing a pure mage and doing good. In Morrowind that was next to impossible, you ran out of magicka very fast.
Still the Breton/Atronach as Kitty suggest is a strong combination I think.

Asher, you're playing a lot don't you? :P

bought a 360 and oblivion on the weekend

i tried the breton atronach combo which i had had so much fun with in morrowind, but tbh it sucked, the old summon ancestral ghost for easy magicka regen thing seems impossible now

restarted as a kajit assassin, loads of fun, about lvl 4 now, done the first few bits of the main quest

asher, how do i get in touch with the thieves guild? i keep seeing references to gray fox etc but can't seem to find him or anyone else from the guild...

I'm toying with the idea of starting again, and doing a character based on the Grey Sourcer, from Fritz Leiber novels (kind of a combat thief fascinated by magic, but pretty crap at it)

Had an absolute epic battle yesterday with 3 necromancers and their summoned sidekicks - took 5 or 10 minutes of mad rushing around, healing, slicing, and nuking, but I beat them. Chopping them up seemed to work best, but my only area spell is a weak fireball

Just got my mage's guild staff, and made a nice "on touch" absorb health 10 meters/yards spell that should be useful if I ever run into more groups

restoration school is super powerful now that mana regenerates

I have never played a Mage

I had one character in Morrowind, he didn't beleive in using any magic (he was sign of the atronaukt)

but I found that a bit hard to play, so I started using potions and enchants...

I was mostly theiving and fighting (I found this nice cat woman who gave me tons of good theif quests.. I didn't actually get along with the theives guild very well at all)

I didn't actually do much fo the main quest in Morrowind (I quit for a while to play MP NWN, and then couldnt' remember teh quests when I tried to returned)

in this game I am playing a do gooder, I use restoration a lot (almost continually), but otherwise have only used a couple of illusion and destruction magic spells (the flare I started with, and a charm person I bought)

I have sneak and security, but I don't want to be a theif.. so not sure how I will use it (I want to be a theif catcher.. but that might be hard to do)

I have a quest right now where I think both the people are probably bad (two sides of the coin?) but I am not sure if I will abe able to turn them both in (and keep the loot)

To get into the Dark Brotherhood you need to murder an innocent and then sleep. You'll be contacted.

yup i'm in. the hints on how to do that were fairly heavy handed, but the hard bit was finding an innocent who wasn't near any guards. in the end some old bloke near kvatch did the trick

so far i seem to be able to balance my thieves guild membership and my dark brotherhood membership, don't know if i'll be able to proceed down the quest line and keep both though...

I killed an innocent (one of the two boys at the farm) several times when I just started

I took that down as learning the system, and reloaded

if I kill an innocent in the future I will just live with it

the only bounty I have had was for assault though (I think of Martin)

I've had bounties for killing off several guards who caught me pickpocketing. Then I paid Armand Cristoph to get rid of the bounties.

I did that battle this morning. Tough but fun.

I had more problems with the deranged zombies in the previous step for the mage guild.

Wel, now that I am a bit better at blocking it ain't so bad really. Basically my tactic is to keep my shield up, and as soon as they swing at it, attack back, and raise shield immediately. Bit of a pita, but it works at least.

That reminds me, must try and hook my PC up to my 32" LCD television. Still only level 2, but I have barely played it.

Oh, and one tip from the guide - use bows to "pull" single enemies from a distance. Works great against groups, if you can get enough distance away. Stand a distance away, shoot one, then run around a corner or the like. They come to you, one at a time.

I don't think I can do mage guild.. since I am doing fighter guild

btw, are there less factions this time?

in Morrowind there was the three houses

the Three guilds

Imperial Guard, Imperial Church, and Blade

and I think others... (the Assassins?)

Here I can only find 5 factions so far
