I already decided not to go for this one.

I want a phone with:
-qwerty keyboard, preferably a slider like the palm pre or a blackberry design (one handed texting)
-preferably a 3,5 inch screen (useful for navigation)
-1 ghz processor and lots of RAM (for smooth operating)
-gps, with compass (for navigating)
-3,5 mm headset jack (for plugging in my Senheiser headset)
-5 megapixel camera with a decent lens (so quick pics of the kids look halfway decent)
-preferably running android 2.1 (phone OS of the future, I think)

All the elements are in the market, but no one has put them together yet.

Nokia N900, fills most of those criteria it's running Linux/Maemo not Android though.

The Motorola Droid is probably closest (only thing it doesn't have is the 1GHz CPU -- it's 600MHz like the iPhone 3GS).

The physical keyboard on these phones are overrated. I've extensively used an HTC Dream which has the same keyboard layout as the Droid, and I can actually type faster in the touchscreen keyboard mode. Ditto for virtually every other physical keyboard phone except Blackberries...The Palm Pre is the worst.

The only thing missing from the Nexus One from your list is the physical keyboard which, as I say, is not really necessary. It adds bulk and mechanical complexity (part to break) without speeding up text entry.

You mean it's running Linux/Maemo instead of Linux/Android.

Maemo is a dead end, FWIW. I've heard Nokia is looking at Android now. There's no point in putting all of the dev effort into Maemo when they can leverage what other people are already doing, for free, in Android.

You may be right on the virtual keyboard, I must say that I have never used a virtual keyboard for a longer period of time. So maybe I should give it a try.

The N900 seems to work only in landscape mode, which would drive me crazy (plus what Asher said on the OS).
I like the design of the upcoming HTC Trophy, that has a 3 inch screen and blackberry layout. But that will run on Windows mobile (and has a slightly smaller screen).

I'm long overdue for a new phone. I get a 300 euro bonus from work to buy one (plus they pay the contract). But I'm still holding out for the happy little right mobile.
