Hey, R.C.!
You asked me about 8 months ago to keep an eye out for some music from Belize. Professor S and I just got back from another trip there. I am sure you are away of Andy Palacio, the Garifuna icon of that country who tragically died about a year ago. while we were hangin' at a beach bar one of tenders said that there was a new album out. We didn't have time to track it down there and it hasn't shown up on Amazon. But keep your eyes out. Cheers Dude.

Rammstein's Vokerball live DVD. Awesome. Got to love all the pyrotechnic stuff they bring to the live shows. Seeing them at Manchester Evening News Arena on Feb 2nd (and have spare ticket if anyone's interested!)

Hey paiktis! Have you got any tips for recent, commercially-viable-and-internationally-translatable-yet-musically-interesting Greek pop? I need some for a project.

I really am not the person who follows greek pop. It is really abysmal. I can try of course and help you. What do you mean by "internationally translatable"? In sound/music or in lyrics? Or both? |

Oh you know, stuff that could be a hit elsewhere.
What are the big, big annoying hits that don't require knowledge of the language to appreciate? ![]() jsorense - oh are you talking to me? About Andy Palacio? Thanks, um, not really my thing at all (waaaaay to oriented towards the western market) but I guess I should have specified. Thanks a lot anyway!

Contemporary greek music is divided in certain genres.
There is pop which really nothing interesting Here's an example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9s-GP8jhUBQ Singers are rouvas, paparizou and others... (again I don't know much) Then there are the infamous "dog" songs which are pop songs with very heavy anatolian influence (eastern mediterranean/greek/turkish/middle-eastern blend) Here's an example of that sort of music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l59CG...eature=related Singers include mazonakis, terzis, kokkinou, vandi... Then there is the so called "artful" genre. These are more melodic and generally considered higher quality than the rest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PE4fRS4bjek http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jrbs3QQgBEU Singers malamas, makedonas, savopoulos, galani, arvanitaki, protopsalti... And then others hiphop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmiFKuWj6ZQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mxZ0DRYoc4 terror x crew, low bap, imiskoumpria being the most known "ethnic" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mADY2a0P1g locomondo, maraveyas illegal are some of that |

I checked and I became more depressed.
Ploutarchos, Sfakianakis and Stratis (he's somewhat bearable). They're very close to the "dog" songs in the second example. Woa, cry, cry, cry she left me, woa, woa woa, I am the man you're the woman, woof, woof, I'll love you for ever, you're my princess and generally bullshit equivalant to the philosophical quests and anxieties of a fisherman trying to fuck tourists in rhodes. Really, change your essay

OTOH hand, IMHO the artful genre has some hugely interesting examples... but they are very heavily lyrics oriented (they are like poems). The music and the performance is also usually top notch. I don't think any music in the world comes close to them in their lyrical potency, not even french (asnavour, or brassens or whathaveyou). Personally I respect their quality but I don't belong there - most of the time. Because you know, music is the speech of the soul and a rock'n' roll cry can move me more than a perfectly articulated and melodized poem. But these songs are really diamonds any way you look at them.
"Dog" songs OTOH might provide some exotic spice but they're really so shit... Besides, they come mostly from the Rembetika of the '30s which were the songs of the immigrants from asia minor, and THEY, in contsrast to their today's evolution, were literally gems thrown in piles of mud. Hah, it's not for an essay, it's for this competition I'm in called the Pop World Cup.
Bascially, each competitor draws one of the teams from the real World Cup randomly, then there are "matches" - one-on-one song competitions - as if it was the actual cup draw. I've drawn Greece, and I'm up against quite a difficult draw since South Korea and Nigeria are really good at commercial pop and Argentina has a strong indie/electro/cumbia scene. So far I've mostly been looking at the skiladiko/doggie stuff, but that "artful" material looked really interesting! Can you tell me a little bit more about it as a genre? Who produces, where does it come from, what's it called in greek, who consumes it?

The artful genre ("entechno" in greek) knew an explosion at the 60's when Greece was in a period of extraordinary turmoil. They were then known as the "new wave" of greek music and were heavily politisized (savvopoulos, old tsanaklidou). Afterwards they assumed the name "entechno" - meaning "in art" or "artful" or even "working the craft" and they became oriented towards the person (as political turmoil resided a bit). Where they come from is a big question. They incorporate a wide array of musical orientations. From anatolian lamenting songs, to western "room - music" to very very old traditional greek music (whos roots are almost unreachable to know now). They are singer oriented. They don't work in the way of a band. You have enterpreuters who give life to the works of a composer and a lyrics writer. There are light versions of those songs (like tsaligopoulou http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbEQlnIMVLo ) but most of them are deep with all the meaning of the word, like alexiou http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-UiluB4cZo (one of the one or two songs that can make me cry!) another by alexiou http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lF3zt...eature=related The ones who listen to them... you can find all different kinds of people that can listen to them. I guess whoever finds them interesting. Last edited by paiktis; 24-01-2010 at 14:02:41. |

This is actually very good material! Thank you, might well turn up in my list. I'm surprised, do you have any more of the end that leans towards trip-hop sort of, with the dubby bits?

Glad you like them
I admit you must be in a specific kind of mood to enjoy them. I could try to translate some of the lyrics but I'm a bit afraid to. It's hard. What do you mean by trip hop with the dubby bits? I admit you lost me there. Here's another entechno (with cretan influences - which I personally love - they have the same 12 meter scale as most rock music if you listen closely to them) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s0q4YfScc0 and another cretan entechno http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fijrzwu6i_Q Last edited by paiktis; 25-01-2010 at 13:29:06. |

Thanks for all the tips, paiktis! I think I'm going for an Alexiou track for the next round, not sure yet.
![]() I really like the slow, dark, slightly electronic side of this genre, that's what I'm kind of looking for I think. What about rock, indie, electro etc? Anything fun there?
