Hey, R.C.!
You asked me about 8 months ago to keep an eye out for some music from Belize. Professor S and I just got back from another trip there. I am sure you are away of Andy Palacio, the Garifuna icon of that country who tragically died about a year ago. while we were hangin' at a beach bar one of tenders said that there was a new album out. We didn't have time to track it down there and it hasn't shown up on Amazon. But keep your eyes out. Cheers Dude.

Contemporary greek music is divided in certain genres.

(again I don't know much) Then there are the infamous "dog" songs which are pop songs with very heavy anatolian influence (eastern mediterranean/greek/turkish/middle-eastern blend) Here's an example of that sort of music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l59CG...eature=related Singers include mazonakis, terzis, kokkinou, vandi... Then there is the so called "artful" genre. I checked and I became more depressed.
Ploutarchos, Sfakianakis and Stratis (he's somewhat bearable). They're very close to the "dog" songs in the second example. Woa, cry,cry,cry she left me, woa, woa woa, I am the man you're the woman, woof, woof, I'll love you for ever, you're my princess and generally bullshit equivalant to the philosophical quests and anxieties of a fisherman trying to fuck tourists in rhodes. Really, change your essay

OTOH hand, IMHO the artful genre has some hugely interesting examples... but they are very heavily lyrics oriented (they are like poems). The music and the performance is also usually top notch. I don't think any music in the world comes close to them in their lyrical potency, not even french (asnavour, or brassens or whathaveyou). Personally I respect their quality but I don't belong there - most of the time. Because you know, music is the speech of the soul and a rock'n' roll cry can move me more than a perfectly articulated and melodized poem. But these songs are really diamonds any way you look at them.
"Dog" songs OTOH might provide some exotic spice but they're really so shit... Besides, they come mostly from the Rembetika of the '30s which were the songs of the immigrants from asia minor, and THEY, in contsrast to their today's evolution, were literally gems thrown in piles of mud. Hah, it's not for an essay, it's for this competition I'm in called the Pop World Cup.
Bascially, each competitor draws one of the teams from the real World Cup randomly, then there are "matches" - one-on-one song competitions - as if it was the actual cup draw. I've drawn Greece, and I'm up against quite a difficult draw since South Korea and Nigeria are really good at commercial pop and Argentina has a strong indie/electro/cumbia scene. So far I've mostly been looking at the skiladiko/doggie stuff, but that "artful" material looked really interesting! Can you tell me a little bit more about it as a genre? Who produces, where does it come from, what's it called in greek, who consumes it?

I admit you must be in a specific kind of mood to enjoy them. I could try to translate some of the lyrics but I'm a bit afraid to. It's hard. What do you mean by trip hop with the dubby bits? I admit you lost me there. Thanks for all the tips, paiktis! I think I'm going for an Alexiou track for the next round, not sure yet.
I really like the slow, dark, slightly electronic side of this genre, that's what I'm kind of looking for I think. What about rock, indie, electro etc? Anything fun there?
