Edge of Darkness- the movie

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1226273/

Martin Campbell directed the original BBC serial, and he's hot property after "Casino Royale". With Mel Gibson on board, it looks like a goer.

Pros-

Mel Gibson can do subtlety, so he could carry it off.
Same director as the original.

Cons-

Mel Gibson doesn't usually do subtlety.
Could be hit by an anti-Gibson backlash
Editing it down from 6 hours is going to lose an awful lot of story.

Pah, if it doesn't have Joe Don Baker in it, i'm not interested.

It seems a strange choice for a remake especially from Hollywood. However the writer did write the screenplay for The Departed (Hooray) but also did the screenplay for Kingdom of Heaven (Boo).

Could be hit by an anti-Gibson backlash? I think that's very likely.

I'm betting that, as part of the process of editing it down to feature-film length, they'll merge the characters of Craven and Jedburgh into one lead role.

In doing so, they'll be giving Gibson a more overtly action-oriented role, and give their star the big plutonium rod sequence (assuming it stays in- I'm hoping it does, because it's a classic scene).

Updated.

Looks like I'm wrong. Jedburgh is still in it, but as he'll be played by Ray Winstone (replacing De Niro), the token American of the TV serial is now an token Englishman.

Some Serbian unknown is playing Emma. It's all a bit light on famous names.

Well, it's out on the 29th January.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone seeing it, especially if they're familiar with the original version (relevant thread here- http://www.counterglow.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13491)

Well, I will see it anyway. The original was awesome - I think they have it at the library.

Saw this last night and on the whole liked it.

From my fuzzy recollections (it’s been at least 20 years since seeing the original), the the film had a similar sort of feel to it but, apart from the names and the general direction of the overarching plot, the story threads are different or have been jumbled up.

Mel was not subtle in this.

7/10

Wow, just reread the plot to the original. The remake is about a 2/10 compared to the original. Think I'll get it from the library for the weekend...
