Post Free Game of the Week - Winter Drift

Thanks for the response from last week, this one is also fun and addictive but a tad more skill-based and seasonal.

http://www.mercedes-amg.com/games/drift/index_en.html

Still, there's a definite tactical element in the order of the boards...

Tip - fight your natural urge to drive clockwise.

I also need to fight my natural urge not to drive into things I can't see until a half second before I drive into them, radar be damned!

Innit, I've pretty much got my route down now, just need to get faster.

Best score so far 285ish

Do you ever find games that you instinctively know that no matter how much you practise, you're never ever going to be any good at them?

Anyway, my best score was 6

Argh! How do you get scores that big? I can drive round not lifting my finger of the accelerator, drifting every gate at an average of about 7 or 8 meters, and still not get over 700. What am I doing wrong?

Are you driving the circuit? I hit all seven gates in the same order every time. I make it around just under 3 times (generally twice fully plus 5 or 6 out of 7 on the last trip). This makes 19 or 20 shots. I average 9-10 feet per shot (I max out at 12 on some of the easier gates, and only get 5-6 feet on that bastard in the bottom right corner). 20*9.5*7 = 1330

I played a couple of dozen more times, but the highest I managed was a 1355 or so. No great improvement in the last little while. I still made a couple of mistakes on that 1350 run. Could easily have gotten to 1500 if I hadn't made them.

By the way, you should be taking your finger off the acelerator after you run through some of the gates. Otherwise you continue to skid too far.

I hit the gates in the following order, BTW:

1) Bottom center
2) Bottom right. This gate sucks.
3) Center right. I don't even slow down here. Waggle my back end to pick up as much as possible
4) Top right. One of the better gates. I average ~11.5 feet here
5) Top left. Another good gate. Not quite as good as 4
6) Center screen. Be sure to let go of accelerator here, to set up
7) Bottom left. Again, let go of accelerator coming out of gate. Go back to 1

I just tried your route and got my best score first go (703). My route wasn't much different, I just started with the bottom left gate, then followed your route, except missing out the bottom left gate on my second lap (so jumping from the centre screen to bottom centre on lap 2). I guess I was just wasting time. Still don't get close to 2 and a half laps though, I'm lucky if I manage 2.

I think you're probably overskidding. It's much more efficient to slow down considerably and then reaccelerate than it is to continue in your skid (this applies only when you need to make a major change of direction coming out of one gate to get to the next, i.e. gates 6 and 7.

I considered hitting gate 7 first, but it seemed to waste more time than it was worth. I also considered skipping gate 2 after first round (like you were doing). I haven't bothered to experiment with that yet, though.

I've still got a couple of hundred more points available just by hitting my gates cleaner using my current method. I want to put down a 1500 before I try any radical changes.

I've found with the lateral shifts in full, you can pop a pocket ace and slam the shifter into gonad. But only if you have lots of fibre.

It's Jeremy Clarkson, presenter of the UK's (so therefore the world's) number one car show Top Gear. He talks exactly like your previous post.

I believe he won the jacket from Laz in a bet.

Unfortunately not, if you look at the high score table people have got upwards of 2000 points. The current record is 2042.175...
