Post Downloading music good for the music industry

From Guardian Online

"Faced with an industry in freefall, what should one do? One option would be to have a look at the facts about how it affects Britain. But first, a question. By how much do you think record sales fell in Britain last year - by 20%, 10% or 5%?"

So true. I'd also agree that the big chains in britain are better than their foreign equivalents at decent content, but the independents, no way. Britain has some of the weakest small independents in the world, with only a couple of huge ones making that activity worthwhile.

But that isn't anything to do with the independants. Look at any retail sector, the reality is Britain is a pikey country that loves chain stores. Pretty much every town centre across the country looks the same. Outside London independants can hardly afford to stay open, let alone carry any depth of stock. I used to know the guy who owns Reading's only real independant record shop (Sound Machine). In reacent years he has started to have to sell more and more chart/mainstream stuff just to make his rent.

You really need state-regulated rents, it'd be so much more beneficial to small-shop owners.

Interesting article.

But I think that Mp3s do hurt the music industry but mainly in what refers to the "big names".
