How do YOU Make Paper Aeroplanes?

This is very much a "must know" for work on a Friday.

I am a traditionalist

1. Crease the paper in the centre (the long side)

2. Fold in the two top corners to the crease

3. Fold the same sides in again to the crease

4. Fold the two halves together

5. Fold down each side to make a wing

and then.......................ping

Are there any alternative designs from you budding aeronautical engineers?

I remember as a kid some guy who came to buy my parents house taught me to make them in some very smart way but I have forgotten.

I am convinced there are alternative technologies out there

There are loads but I can never remember them. That's so simple and effective with standard paper sizes.

Wow - I didn't know there were so many.

But what ones do people actually make as a default?

There are loads more than that. One of my family got a paper aeroplane calender for christmas one year. Every day was a little page you could tear out with folding instructions to make it into a different paper aeroplane.

I have a whole book about it at home...

I remeber this one, which was supposed to be award-winning for some reason:

take a rectangular sheet
fold it along the diagonal
take the fold tips and join them together
fix them wih a paperclip (or was it scotch tape?)
you have now a tube; being the sheet rectangular, the "tail" should be somehow swallow-shaped

Can't recall how much the tips should overlap.

Can't either recall whether an actual paperclip weight was required to supposedly give the craft the proper balance.
It's also possible that before folding the tube, you had to furtherly fold back the intial fold by ~½", in order to have a heavier and stiffer attack rim.

One of my favorites:

1. Fold the paper in half longways.
2. Fold the left corner all the way to the opposite edge.
3. Fold the right corner all the way to the opposite edge.
4. Turn the paper over and fold down where the previous 3 folds intersect, but in the opposite direction.
5. Turn the paper over again and pull at the edges of the last fold, it should form kind of a tent shape. Press it down.
6. Fold the left edge of the tent up to the center.
7. Fold the right edge of the tent up to the center. You should now have a diamond shape.
8. Fold the bottom left and right edges of the diamond up to the center again. Then unfold them.
9. Fold the top left and right edges of the diamond down to the center. Then unfold them.
10. Pinch the left and right corners of the diamond, and pull up both edges along the creases you just made.
11. Fold the tabs that came up back and forth sharply.
12. Turn the paper over and fold the tip down just right where those tabs are.
13. Fold the plane in half opposite of the direction of the fold already on its length.
14. Fold down each of the sides just above the small diamond by the nose to make wings.
15. Fold up the edges of the wings to make wing flaps.
16. Bring up the rear of the feuselage so it goes in the opposite direction as the rest of it. Pinch it shut.
17. Fly the damn thing!

When I was young my Father bought an encyclopedia of paper airplanes. It had a couple hundred patterns in it. Was quite nice. Most were crap though.
