Grammar Police will have a field day with this

From a BBC article showing the press reaction to the new Harry Potter film:

Quote:
Combining the magic of the really real, the nearly real and power of pixels, Cuaron brings to life JK Rowling's Harry Potter in a way we have yet to see fully before.

Daniel Radcliffe is fantastic in this edition. Rupert Grint's (Weasley) defuses a scene effortlessly and that is true magic.

Every now and again you see an actress so young and gifted that she makes one take pause. Emma Watson (Hermione) is a miniature adolescent Grace Kelly.

Alfonso Cuaron he startled me throughout the film with cinematic devices, emotional directions and stylistic flourishes.

Cuaron really has such a light touch to this story, in the end it all feels so easy, so elegant and so effortless. He understands magic more purely than anyone I'm watching make films today.

Film sounds good though. I saw the second one when it came on Sky a few weeks back. It was much better than the first film.

Actually for all the stylistic clunkiness and generally bad writing of that excerpt I didn't spot one outright grammatic mistake, except "Grint's".

i consider:

Quote:
Cuaron brings to life JK Rowling's Harry Potter in a way we have yet to see fully before.
to be a tautology - the 'before' is redundant. In fact the 'fully' is redundant too, but that's more of a stylistic than a grammatical problem.

Quote:
Rupert Grint's (Weasley) defuses a scene effortlessly and that is true magic.
as you mentioned is also wrong, and did he really mean 'defuses a scene'? What the hell does that mean anyway?

Quote:
Alfonso Cuaron he startled me
is obviously wrong

Quote:
He understands magic more purely than anyone I'm watching make films today.
is similarly clearly incorrect.

to defuse a scene sounds like making a potentially exciting scene into something really dull.

"in a way we have yet to see fully before."

Can you see something before, when you have yet to see it? Or before what? Or is that some odd phrase?

So, in other words, to CounterGlow something?

possibly with a half-written post which I submit 2 hours later than I started it, in which time the tread has advanced 2 pages.

OTOH I'm also invisible, thus....

So are you saying "make" should be "making"? Is using the infinitive in a sentence like that a signifyer that there's active participation on the subject's part? "I'm helping johnny steal apples today" is not a problem, "helping johnny stealing" would be.

An "else" could be inserted but "better than anyone" is a bit of an idiom to be honest and nothing I'd react against.

Otherwise the sentence seems totally okay. I don't see the obvious thing wrong with it.

the very smple answer is that the author is not watching anyone make films. People are making films. He is watching the films. He is not watching anyone make films.

'He understands magic more purely than anyone making films today' would be a perfectly reasonable and far clearer sentence.

its just clunky.

"he understands magic more purely than anyone making films today"

is what he means

He's just sticking the "I'm watching" in to make himself sound the center of the world.

obviously you could have "anyone else" instead but I think the "else" is understood.

This is both a grammatical and a syntactic error.

Grammatically, the "have" should be changed to a "had" because now they've seen it.

Syntactically the "before" should also be followed by something like a "this".

Either that or get rid of the before entirely. That would make the sentence more compact, but this is a mere stylistic error.

If you're referring to me then I must point out that you completely missed the had/have issue.
