Post R.I.P. Barry White

Not the usual Counterglow music fodder, I know, but Barry White has died aged 58.

Last night I got the After Dark DJ's to play Love's Theme by the Barry White Love Unlimited Orchestra as a tribute to the great man. He was a legend.

He was a bit crap though, wasn't he? Let's face facts- he took the sort of thing that the early 70's Marvin Gaye did far, far better, and turned it into a cloying saccharine parody.

Thank god someone else said it. He wasn't exactly influential. I like a couple of his tracks but once you get over the abnormally deep voice the music isn't very special. I could be proved wrong though.

Protien, d/l "Loves theme" by the Love Unlimited Orchestra. They're Barry White's band and the track is a tune Barry White wrote. It was the biggest selling single of 1981 or something. It's cool.

Before he became famous for singing his own songs Barry White was a really in-demand session songwriter and piano player. He's written loads of absolutely classic tunes for other people.

Just what is the best downloading software for music now that AudioGalaxy is gone? KaZaA sucks, but I've been quite impressed by BearShare whenever I've run it...

I use Limewire because it's one of the only programs to support Macs. Its a bit shit for rare/unpopular stuff, but pretty good for everything else.

Yeah, me too usually.

I think that everything's out there if you look for long enough. I have a hugh list of songs by my computer which I regularly check for. Most things appear in the end.

Barry White is often credited with being a huge part (if not THE part) of the start of disco.
Hate disco if you want, but, as in tank development, each stage leads to a better one.

OK then back to the fat-not-quite-as-good-as-gaye-or-brown man. He used to spray his scalp black to give the illusion of hair.

Just something I noticed, all I know about him is: 1. a handful of songs that are funny because of his deep voice. 2. He was on the Simpsons. 3. He was fat and sprayed his scalp black to give the illusion of hair.

I still can't seem to get hold of that song.

I think his songs are actually really good if you forget about the deep voice being funny.

I don't find his voice funny, but I still don't rate the songs much. Too cloying by half.
