OK, I know I will be sorry I did this but I am overdue to make brilliant and incisive comments in this very important thread.
Well, I have been trying for over a half an hour to write some, but have failed.
I just want to say the people and the government of the U.S. should not take lightly the amount of distrust there is in the world about our intentions. It should give us pause, IMHO.

Maroule,
Thank you for staying around and arguing your POV here. You are very welcome, even though you are French.

Old_Warrior42+++,
Your really don't suck as much as everyone says.

Flame away , if you like. I don't care. Would only show me something about yourself. :-P~~

I don't try to be too much of a diplomat. I only try to afford everyone the courtesy I would like to have shown to me. Not too much to ask for, in my opinion.

But flame away if you like. I can take it.

Thanks j "sore ends" .

No, but wrapping them in fresh pig skins might.
But that would be a bad thing that only vicious crusaders would consider.

I like it. Pigskin body bags. Chances are it would fit right in with other outrageous sounding things being said about us in the arab press, so we might be able to sneak this one in.

moonim, there is a lot of anger in you about the EU. That's another debate. But anyway the decision to join the EU is taken through a democratic process, and if Giscard gets his way there will also be a clause for getting out. So political action is possible for you... as a side note, in France, parties opposing Europe are extreme left (PC and other trotskists and anti mondialisation groups) and extreme right (Le Pen). Take your pick.

ok, civility has returned and we agree to disagree a bit more peacefully. Considering how we get at each other throats while actually sharing the same side, I think we should get more alternative view points here (a few moderate arabs, jordanians, egyptians, etc.). That would be fun/interesting.

No need to be an the defense against the clueless europhobes. The EU "has weathered worse storms than this alreay", and it is still evolving. That's in no way mutually exclusive.

"and no amount of time will ever put it right"

I suggest emigration for you, then.

I don't particularly care about the EU, actually. I just wish we weren't in it.

I don't oppose the notion of an European Union (a federal one, even) but I can't stomach this European Union. It needs either radical reform quickly or roll over and die as soon as possible. Since I agree with Roland reform isn't gonna happen anytime soon I'd like to at least see it dismantled. Happily, since the current batch of Euro leaders have proven to be absolutely useless at setting up working conditions for the expansions, that might well happen sooner than you gentlemen think.

Your smoothness when cornered leaves something to be desired - especially for lawyer, Rol.

That's actually not a bad suggestion. Pure demographics coupled with pension system setup would indicate that anyway to anyone below 40 in Europe. But it's still a shame, since there is no intrinsic reason Europe has to suck so bad.

CAP reform. For institutional reform, Nice has shown that our "leaders" are useless indeed, but that might be a successful outsourcing project.

What's so bad about this EU ? Politics-wise you get the same crap as on the national level, mostly because it's the same political powers.
