Californian Woman Awarded $28bn for being stupid

Fucking ridiculous...

Quote:
A California jury has ordered cigarette giant Philip Morris to pay $28bn (17bn)in punitive damages to a cancer-stricken smoker.

Philip Morris said it planned to appeal to the court to quash the verdict and order a new trial, and would ask for a reduction in the size of the award if its request for a new trial was denied.

The award, the biggest ever in a smoking-related lawsuit, comes on top of an initial $850,000 payout intended to compensate the plaintiff - a 64 year old woman suffering from lung cancer - for her illness.

The verdict wiped 6% off Philip Morris' share price, and dragged other tobacco stocks lower in sympathy.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. I don't even want to imagine what'll happen when the boomers get old.

The amount of money is nonsensical. ALthough she won't be seeing much of it anyway. What's the lawyers cut these day, 99%?

And juries tend to be stupid, thinking that it's okay to award somebody enough money to make them a rival to other billionaires.

Finally a case where Roland might come in handy: is this punitive damages, like that McD show, or did they actually award her all of that on her own?

Punitive damages can only be 4 times the amount of compinsationary damages, and the compensation damages wasn't that high it sounds like from the way Phillip Morris lawyers were talking.

I think it's a relatively small (compared to the 42 billion) compensation damage, and a huge punitive damage... more reason idiots should not be allowed on the jury.

They toss the x4 punitive limit out for 'evil' products. They did that just to go after the Tobacco Industry.

Here's a fun fact... when NASA banned smoking in any of it's facilities, it's cost for health care and days lost to worker illness went up x1000. The reason? The nicotine and tar was getting caught in the filter and that sticky muck was catching and filtering a lot more particles out of the air.

That's from our resident anti-smoking nazi in Health and Safety.

People who smoke also pay more then their share of taxes, and are kind enough to die earlier and at a less cost to society then those that don't. Another fun fact of the Government...

What the hell kind of particles do you have in a computer lab at Nasa that are 1000 times more toxic than cigarette smoke?

I suspect if that was true you would all be dead.

Laz - since Lung cancer is uncurable for any amount and also hideously physically debilitating, I dispute that statement. A little bit.

Asbestos dust is the most common thing. Then there are the spores from the mold that grows in the dark spaces between the buildings walls and the cublicle walls. Some are very dangerous to mammalian life forms.

Lets see... There is a list of over a million dangerous 'Over the legal limit for Death Row Inmates' particles, actually. I didn't know there were so many dangerous things in the world... and it's a hell of a document. Too bad it's behind 3 fire walls or I'd post the link. Although that would probably get me fired at a minimal, and at maximum be brought up on treason or espionage.

There's enough Mustard Gas, leaking into the local area alone, at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), to classify all of North Alabama as an EPA superfund clean up site. And that's the least dangerous elements. The old nuclear munitions at the Anniston Arsenal that were too old, fragile, and deteroirated to be stored safely anymore were desposed on Redstone Arsenal (the Army base that also hosts MSFC). According to our Safety and our Security guys, that junk is leaking as well...

Tons of crap like that. The only other use the government could legally appoint Redstone to, if it had to do something else with it, is give it back to the Native American people. And they aren't going to do that after moving 2 towns out of the way to make Redstone and MSFC.

Survival rate of the most aggressive- small cell- is about 5%. However even if you do pop your clogs your family will be seriously minted.
