Richard Garriot's next big thing...
Richard Garriott (you may know him better as Lord British) is working on a new online multiplayer (well, duh, if it's online) fantasy RPG. I'd review the preview, but that would be pointless.

I was disappointed in the extreme with Ultima IX however, so I imagine I'll be waiting for some other sucker to try this one first and read his rants (or raves) online.

I thought Garriot had nothing to do with ultima XI?

MDA, you could always preview the preview!! :D

Oh wow, Garriot is really starting to look old. He's beginning to lose hair.

Ok, what was the topic?

Shining1: Garriott took UIX back over when Origin fired the bloke that was leading it (I forget his name, but the Ultima community thought he was the Guardian in disguise - will refer to him as whassisface). So, yes, he had full control of UIX for at least a year before it was released. Prior to that he was still the overseer, just he left most decisions to whassisface, just sort of played the company director role.

Fair enough. Sounds like he is about as good as Sid Meier these days, then.

I liked Ultima until U6. After that it became slightly annoying, because it was the same map, monsters and setup you played since U4 and there were too many superfluous details (I guess baking bread in a game is as boring as in real life). The SP RPG moved to Baldur's Gate etc ... so Garriot is trying to copy the success of UO. Never played it.

I didn't play 5 and 6 - but 4 and 7 were my favorites. 3 was also good, I loved hanging around waiting for Dawn to appear, for some reason (That was 3-exodus, right?). The balloon in 4 kicked ass, as did playing pirate with the ship/wheel.

I never played UO, either, but I know it was popular. After IX came out, he mentioned in an interview that there would be a shift in focus to online games.

Ultima worked better with the more simple graphics, I think. The same goes for Civ-type games. It's colourfull and animated but I often have problems to spot units and get lost. If you got a slow computer it takes quite a while to move around, slomo, that's really a bugger.
U9 did not really work, the world was slow and small (though it looked quite good), but it was missing the "magic". I liked U3 best. I think U4 or U5 was the game where you had to control up to 8 players, that was annoying.

You were waiting on Dawn to appear so you could go into the magic village that had all the fantastic equipment. Also appeared briefly at Sunset.

That was it - magic galore!

7 was the best for me. I didn't even bother beating the game. I just made tons and tons and tons of money and bought like 2 boats. I had cannons on the boats and all sorts of weapons. I had a carriage just because I could, I also had the HOE OF DESTRUCTION! The single funniest weapon in any Ultima game.

Not just that he is losing his hair and his marbles?
