Blood Bowl Newbie Training Wheels League

Ok. This league is for players who want to be involved in Season 3 of Blood Bowl, but need to get some practice in first/create a slightly higher value team. I think it should be starter teams only. And for newbies only (plus Illi).

The league is here:

http://bloodbowldigital.com/index.ph...e&leagueId=768

Follow the instructions in the Season 2 thread for creating your team.

I suggest before building and submitting your team you read carefully some of the guides for your chosen race (and maybe ask here for advice).

Links here to some very decent advice about starting builds and race strategy:

http://www.cyanide-studio.com/forumB...p?f=11&t=15887

General principles (Exceptions apply):

1. Re-rolls, re-rolls, re-rolls. They are at least half price when you pick your team and vital in the game.
2. Apothecary is a luxury you can start without, your starter players are unskilled and therefore replaceable.
3. Cheerleaders, schmeerleaders. Only of use on one of the kick off results. You are better off saving the money to go towards an apothecary, more positional players later.
4. Elf Linesmen are already really good. You don't necessarily need positional players.
5. It's a rare good starting build that has more than 11 players in it.

Oh, and read the Living Rule Book 5.

6. When you get your first level up - Ask someone else before you fix it. This can be the difference between an effective player and someone who just increased your TV for no benefit.

Funko 23-07-2010 16:22:26

Yeah, good call. There will be differences of opinion but we'll all agree on bad choices.

MOBIUS 23-07-2010 19:47:01

Yeah, never realised the rerolls were half price in advance...

In fact those first tips could also be entitled "guess what mobius did" :D

MDA 26-07-2010 20:01:06

Am I right in assuming Classic LRB5 mode for the team creation?

Fistandantilus 26-07-2010 20:34:22

You are.

MDA 27-07-2010 00:21:19

Well, I think I'm going Chaos, although I considered Dwarves (no experience with them, even against AI) and Lizardmen (we have two already).

Fistandantilus 27-07-2010 07:11:36

:vom:

illi 27-07-2010 09:17:59

Some delay for me while I await Orcalogic 4MB RAM delivery and hope that my bro can open the back of the acer without breaking it, which it seemed I was going to be unable to do, so I didn't GFI.

MOBIUS 27-07-2010 09:24:56

So I take it your bro is the equiv of a reroll…?;)

illi 27-07-2010 09:33:04

:)

illi 02-08-2010 16:35:41

The shit has hit the fan!

Hey chaps, I tried out my new 'fast' computer in an online BB challenge, and it was the same infuriating story, with scaring my wife and having a thoroughly angermaking hour and a half. Didn't play too badly either, losing 2-1 to a slightly more pointful skaven team as 1000pt wood elves, but it could have been 4-1 and until I get a table (sideways sitting backcurl not good) and a desktop I'm going to give it a miss due to Traumatic stress. Was thinking Dwarves but now I could only regret passing up the challenge of getting the damn elves through a season alive!

On a happier note, I just read some of Paiktis on the other thread and am very impressed YES impressed by the poetry, inspiring! see you in a future league, wood elves natch. :gotit:

Funko 03-08-2010 07:42:51

ok so the newbie league only has one player. :D

Greg W 03-08-2010 09:17:42

Gimme a couple of months and I will see what I can do. But it won't happen for 2-3 months, and that's if everything goes to plan.

illi 03-08-2010 09:58:46

Hey MDA I'll give you a game

When is good for you? I may have to be choosy so please send a few options - will play at me Mum's desktop

MDA 03-08-2010 10:26:21

Well, I rolled a team, then drifted off somewhere.

:(

If you're free Monday evenings, I can play some games with you.

MDA 03-08-2010 12:27:40

I rolled up a Chaos team, they should be pretty beatable with low skills and a short newbie season. Plus, I'll be running them and got beat by the AI last week.

MDA 03-08-2010 20:53:26

So, DID I FUCKWIT THE WHOLE LEAGUE UP?

because it actually looks like it uploaded ok from here

I nothing else comes of it, at least I did that right.

and can also see everyone's name in the Hamachimajig, so that's good.

Beta1 04-08-2010 09:30:28

I'm up for the occasional training game too - you name the opposition you want and I'll field it. (just not gobbos)

I'm away next week but I'm on holiday till the start of september so plenty of time to play.

Funko 04-08-2010 09:44:38

Looks ok to me MDA.

illi 09-08-2010 09:02:41

Will scout around on a free Monday evening for an occasional game, though will be moving flat on 9/11 - gives rise to downtime.

MOBIUS 09-08-2010 09:33:10

I can play a game this evening if anyone fancies? I don't even mind playing as Gobbos...:D

MDA 09-08-2010 11:38:53

I'm actually at work today, and have a late afternoon meeting to make it worse.

I've finally come to the conclusion that I've severely underestimated the value of mighty blow. It's fantastic. I injured or killed about nine players (against the AI) this weekend in a single game. Putting it on blitzers and a couple of lineman-type players is fun. Maybe not as smart as getting block/guard first, but fun.

MOBIUS 09-08-2010 11:42:07

There is a school of thought that getting mighty blow first is a good course of action over the preferred block as a first skill, as your guy gets experience quicker through his increased CAS rate.

OMG, I've actually been paying attention to BB strategy!

Beta1 14-08-2010 20:05:22

I'm back!

On the block/might blow argument - you are more likely to win your blocks with block. Mightblow is only usefull if you can win that block in the first place.

If your a ST4 player (saurus/chaos warrior/Black orc) then you are already going to be getting 2d blocks in most 1:1 fights, in this case mighty blow makes sense.

If your a STR3 player then unless you are suported most blocks will be 1d, block then makes it much more likely you will win that block.

On the other hand mighty blow is most usefull in attacking players - I tend to use my CWs as defensive players - they tie up a lot of opposition as most teams will have to gang up on them to get even a 1d block. 2 human players attacking a CW only get 1d, with block they then need a defender stumbles or defender down roll if I have block - 1/3 chance compared to 1/2 without block. I generally go block on 2 CWs, and guard on the ohter 2. the 4CWs supporting each other become very hard to crack. I tend to put mightblow on a BM often one that already has frenzy. With the horns skill they are going to be making most of the blitzes with frenzy theres a good chance of making lots of blocks.

Hell if your after cheap SPP take Pass and just lob the ball around!

Beta1 17-08-2010 07:31:55

so anyone up for a game this week?

MDA 18-08-2010 11:08:16

I was almost free for a game tonight/this afternoon. :(

Beta1 18-08-2010 11:20:41

was? I'm free this evening (UK time). Probably tomorrow evening, could possibly play friday during the day if the mrs will let me.

MDA 18-08-2010 12:05:21

Friday might work - looks like I'm 4 hours behind you in the summer and I finish up at 3pm.

Today/tonight we're going shopping.

Funko 18-08-2010 12:22:11

We have summertime too so you are still 5 hours behind.

MDA 18-08-2010 12:53:09

I thought that was a uniquely US farm industry thing, interesting.

Funko 18-08-2010 13:23:02

Everywhere in Europe and many other places have it.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...bdivisions.png

Everywhere in blue has it, orange used to.

MOBIUS 18-08-2010 13:24:50

Nah, you probably stole it from us, like everything else...:p

I could potentially be up for a daytime game of BB on Friday.

MDA 19-08-2010 12:12:34

I'm done at 3pm here, so 8 pm or later UK time. Is there anything else I need to do other than have a team uploaded and the Hamachi client installed and connected?

Beta1 19-08-2010 17:17:38

turns out I can't play friday during the day but should be OK friday night but would have to be about 9pm or later. Otherwise baby stops play is a real possibility.

Also as it wouldn't be a newbie league game you don't even have to upload a team - as long as you have it created on your computer the game will do the rest.

MDA 20-08-2010 11:31:38

9 pm works fine for me, sounds good

Beta1 20-08-2010 15:11:22

excellent. What race woul dyou like me to play - bearing in mind I'm pretty rubbish with dwarfs, gobbos or orcs.

MDA 20-08-2010 15:23:10

Anything you like, really. I'll make a baby Chaos team since that was my original plan for newbie league.

I guess the smart answer would have been "dwarfs, gobbos, or orcs".

Beta1 20-08-2010 21:32:44

1-0 to my dark elves

A good debut match from MDA - conceded a score early on due to a poor starting position but 2 good solid drives after that that I only just held off. The last one left me making dodge/1d blocks to stop the score.

MDA 20-08-2010 22:51:25

I learned a lot just in the first half, enough to put up a decent show in the second anyway. The two man advantage might have helped just a bit.

I drowned my sorrow with come coconut chip ice cream. I'm pretty sure it was made by halflings.

Fistandantilus 11-09-2010 20:39:20

Nills Lagerbaak 13-09-2010 09:23:12
