MAME & Classic arcade games

I'm running out of ideas for new things to play. Anyone have any favorites they'd like to recommend me? Particularly vertical scrolling shooters, top down racing games, and fun Bomber Man/Puzzle Bobble type games. Or anything else good.

C.G.B. Spender 27-05-2008 13:12:18

Consoles or PC?

Debaser 27-05-2008 13:21:38

Old arcade games. Mid-late 90s epsecially.

C.G.B. Spender 27-05-2008 13:26:19

I bought Lego StarWars for the kids and kind liked it myself. Co-op mode is cool too. It's kinda jump and runnish, but fun.

We also got a collection of arcade games for the GBA, and I like DigDug.
You might get this as abandonware, along together with 1.000 other retro games using a C64 emulator, IIRC it's c64.net or .org.

Sim Golf?

Like micro-machines, original Grand Theft Auto etc. not driving convertibles.

Nills Lagerbaak 28-05-2008 16:05:01

Spy hunter? Always a classic!

What's wrong with horizontal scrollers? x-out is a great shooter..

MattHiggs 28-05-2008 19:06:16

I used to like a scrolling shooter called Xenon.

Walrus Feeder 28-05-2008 23:08:00

Do you remember when the Amiga was launched around 1990? It came with about 12 games such as Escape from the planet of the robot monsters, Barbarian ("Prepare to die!" ha ha.) and a vertical scroller called Insanity Fight, when after fighting scores of small ships a hugh mother flew over taking up the whole screen?

MDA 29-05-2008 10:42:13

There was an isometric scroller called Uridium I used to play long long ago... similar to Zaxxon

Debaser 29-05-2008 23:37:34

Yeah, I've played most of those games, especially the Amiga ones. Wasn't it the Atari ST that came with that 12 game pack though? Certainly Barbarian came with the ST. The Amiga 500 came with the mighty Interceptor, Batman, and The New Zealand Story in it's most popular deal, though other options were available. I remember there was a very cool Shadow of the Beast deal for a while, including a memory upgrade and flashy 'Bug' joystick.

I was looking for suggestions of actual classic coin-op arcade machines for my MAME emulator. Recently I've been playing Final Fight, Ikari Warriors and Paper Boy, as well as the awesome DoDonPachi and Batsugun top down shooters (as recommended by KG in that other thread ages ago). I want more ideas for stuff like that really. The problem with MAME stuff is that most games have dated really badly. It's rare to find one that is actually as good as you remember it first time around.

And the top-down racer thing was because at my local leisure centre there used to be a Badlands machine (a sequel to the pioneering Super Sprint in all but name). At the time it was probably my favorite game (very underrated) and it's still pretty cool. I want games like that.

That was an awesome game - that screenshot brings back many good memories.

King_Ghidra 30-05-2008 08:38:49

'ivan ironman stewart's [something or other]' was a similar super sprint/badlands style arcade game that me and the hefferans used to play via an amiga conversion. i remember it being pretty fun.

Funko 30-05-2008 08:39:25

Ivan Ironman stewart's super off road. That was great fun yeah.

C.G.B. Spender 30-05-2008 09:04:07

What is a hefferan?

Funko 30-05-2008 09:05:27

Like an arsehole but bigger.

MoSe 30-05-2008 09:16:18

I think it was a minor character in the prequel stories for SMAC.

IIRC he died horribly maimed by a Spartan gunboat shortly after his appearance

LoD 30-05-2008 13:49:52

For SMACX you mean.

MoSe 30-05-2008 14:30:07

you might be right

Funko 30-05-2008 14:32:04

Really?

Fistandantilus 30-05-2008 14:46:02

Own goal.

Funko 30-05-2008 14:51:23

No, I genuinely don't know if they are joking or serious.

Fistandantilus 30-05-2008 15:15:05

Wow, you are really getting old if you don't remember that :(

There were entire threads on that which you replied too. Just a quick google search

Have a look at Ep 4 part 3 :D

Funko 30-05-2008 15:25:05

No, I totally don't remember that. I'd given up on SMAC way before SMACX came out. I certainly never played it. Was that actually in the manual?

Funko 30-05-2008 15:29:46

I just found the manual in PDF, answer, no.

MoSe 30-05-2008 15:40:54

No, it was in the story chapters published on one of the sites (prolly firaxis rather than owo)

MoSe 30-05-2008 15:47:39

"There is not an ounce of moonlight," said Hefferan. "Bad luck that both suns are on the far side."

geez, didn't he know about Gegenschein???

King_Ghidra 02-06-2008 11:48:16

16gb of mame roms grabbed this weekend. should be some good ones in there somwhere.

Debaser 02-06-2008 11:52:41

That's a lot of games!

I played through the original Ghosts and Ghouls last night. Great game, but tough as fuck.

Funko 02-06-2008 12:02:10

I find a lot of old games I get on emulators are much harder than I remember them being.

King_Ghidra 02-06-2008 13:54:45

well the computer versions are normally dumbed down because of course the arcade versions were specifically designed to eat money.

that said, ghouls and ghosts is often cited as being one of the hardest games ever.

Funko 02-06-2008 14:06:54

Yeah, I'm mainly downloading the C64 or Amiga versions though.

I think a large part of the problem is not having a good old style joystick.

Tizzy 02-06-2008 14:12:09

I found it difficult to get to grips with some of my old Atari games without a joystick, it's just not the same pressing keyboard arrows.

MDA 02-06-2008 16:41:49

I find that difficult to believe. The grips never stayed on the old Atari joystick.

King_Ghidra 03-06-2008 08:06:34

debaser, you've probably played the metal slug series before but if not then that's a big recommendation. side scrolling shooter, brilliant design, humour and graphical style. i seem to have all of them (1-5?) in this rom pack

i now seem to have every mame rom ever, in fact

Debaser 03-06-2008 08:16:09

Yeah, Metal Slug ran on those Neo-Geo based systems if I remember correctly. I'll get downloading now.

EDIT: Blazing Star is another good Neo-Geo game. R-Type style.
