Nintendo Wii
I found myself in Game on Saturday faced with buying either the XBox 360 or the much acclaimed Wii. I was torn between the nerd in me and the fun loving child.

As you've probably worked out from the thread title I bought a Wii with the sports game pack.

I've never had so much fun with gaming since I completed Half Life years and years ago.

I'm in a great deal of pain now after a gruelling 2 hour session on Wii Boxing but I turn to you CG; what other decent games are out there?

maroule 05-06-2007 10:54:43

I like Zelda twilight princess
wario ware should also please you

Bob 05-06-2007 11:00:07

I like Mario Strikers Charged Football.
It's quite funny because it's very different from other football games and I like the comic style. Not really a party game, it's too complex, you gotta figure out some moves and tricks first.

I also played Gottlieb's Pinball Classic a lot, but that's mainly because I played some of the "real" pinball machines a lot. You gotta be a pinball enthusiast to relly love it. Very "laid back"

C@H gave me his copy of Rayman's Raving Rabbits, a very interesting combination of far out mini games. You gotta swing around the controlers A LOT.

I also own Blazing Angels, which is a simple WW2 air combat simulator. A nice game, but not a great Wii game, rather a classic computer game, like the old "Battle of Britain" series.

I didn't like the Zelda game too much. It's neither action nor RPG, it's sometimes boring and the dialogs are rolleyesy. However, it's a REAl BLOCk BUSTER game here, so it HAS to be good. Maybe for teenage nerds only ..

I hope Guitar Hero 3 will be nice

and I'm going to buy Mario Party as soon as it is out

List of Wii-Games

I agree with your view though, it's too much in the middle, but some bits are really brilliant (like snow surfing to get to the yeti mansion, the underwater temple, etc)

MattHiggs 05-06-2007 12:57:09

Thanks, that's a great list. I can't wait for Mario Party, it was a fantastic game on the N64! The PS version including Crash Bandicoot was awful!

Raving Rabbids looks great, I'm sure the missus would love playing that and from what I've heard there are loads of laugh out loud moments.

Bob 05-06-2007 13:13:45

Yeah, I loved the cow tossing contest

Drekkus 05-06-2007 13:43:31

I want a Wii too, but only when it has a dvd player function, which is apparantly only coming at the end of this year. Then it will be the all in one apparatus I have been looking for. Can't wait to play golf with it. Plus it can play my Gamecube games, like Mario Kart.

How does the internetbrowser work, without a keyboard?

Bob 05-06-2007 13:49:46

You use a virtual keyboard. It's OK. The browsing is quite easy with the zoom keys (+ and -). Though typing is simple and easy using the virtual keyboard, it's very annoying when typing a lot of text.

Bob 05-06-2007 13:51:10

I can imagine there will be a Wii-keyboard soon, since the browser ist really sufficient for simple browsing (like CG, amazon, news sites).

Bob 05-06-2007 14:02:48

But like Matt mentioned above: They way of controlling the game via the Wii remote is quite amazing. It's so much more fun than the stupid button clicking on a common controler. It's like really doing the things you see on scren.

My younger son Jesko is excellent at Wii boxing. It's also fun to watch him, because he invests so much energy! Like going berzerk.

I think the Wii style controler is the biggest innovation since 3D graphics

Beta1 05-06-2007 15:55:49

its on my list of things to get.

Right after the projector - wii on a big projector screen look so much fun.

Venom 05-06-2007 16:23:32

The more half-ass party games that come out, the less I become convinced it's anything more than a gimic.

maroule 05-06-2007 16:24:22

I stink at wii boxing, I end up moving my arms frantically and sweating abundantly, with no observable result on the screen,

It also has CoD3.

Just can't find good info on when the dvd player function will be incorporated in Europe.

OldWarrior_42 14-06-2007 02:32:18

My son in law picked up a wii about a month ago and the Tiger Woods golf on my 55 inch screen tv is fucking fantastic.

Of course I pull everything into the woods but I'm working on it..

MDA 14-06-2007 03:23:33

I slice every other shot into the woods, or the middle of the wrong fairway, or the parking lot...

wonder if I'd be any good at a video game version?

Bob 14-06-2007 07:08:04

I see Golf is a sport for old men!

Funko 14-06-2007 08:01:33

So what do you play off Bob?

Bob 14-06-2007 08:17:45

MattHiggs 14-06-2007 12:06:23

I bought Rayman Raving Rabidds yesterday and it's fantastic! The mini-games are so loads of fun and there are loads of genuinely funny moments.

Bob 14-06-2007 12:09:13

Bizarre game.

My kids played some tennis last weekend and it was fun to watch them. Much better than those mouse clicking games!

Asher 16-06-2007 18:30:45

Wait til the honeymoon is over and all you're left with is a plethora of 5.0/10 rated "party games".

Even Mario Party is getting awful reviews.

MattHiggs 16-06-2007 18:52:06

I don't get much time to play games any more so that sounds pretty good to me. It's great I can turn it on have 20 minutes of fun with the missus and then get on with something else.

Qaj the Fuzzy Love Worm 17-06-2007 00:58:10

Nudge nudge wink wink say no more.

Indeed. I have a lot of spare time on my hands, but I finally got tired of epic computer games. Got pretty much warcrafted for some time, but I finally got bored (aka saved).

I think that's 2 PHds.

Tizzy and I just got a Wii. Can we have some up to date wii game recommendations?

MattHiggs 17-07-2008 15:19:28

I sold mine and got a 360 in the end. But these should keep you happy:

Super Smash Brothers
Super Mario Galaxy

They even have their own version of Pro Evo, but I can't confirm whether it is good or pants.

Funko 17-07-2008 15:22:31

Apparently it's very good, totally different control system.

Funko 17-07-2008 18:55:11

This is me on the wii! Very fast!

Funko 18-07-2008 08:12:22

The browser is very fast, the typing is not so fast, although faster than you might thing with the wiimote.

Funko 18-07-2008 09:08:48

Oh and we got Super Smash Bros Brawl last night. It's very good and doesn't use the motion sensing stuff on the remote at all. Just uses the remote and nunchuck combined like a normal controller.

It seems to be very good, frenetic, loads of characters from all the main nintendo/sega franchises, really interesting levels/arenas. Interesting co-op challenges.

I have 500 Wii points left over after getting the web browser (used to be free!) so I'll probably get one of the classic C64 games, Paradroid looking most likely at the moment... Hmm.

Funko 18-07-2008 12:18:20

Reading up on Super Smash Bros Brawl I came across this interview between the president of nintendo and the designer. It's quite long, but I found it very interesting and funny in places. Very polite and possibly a bit arse licky in places but that might be just Japanese cultural difference

The talk about the philosophy of the Wii, the concept of casual vs serious gamers and producing games that beginners can enjoy was very interesting. As well as the reasons for making online multi-player against strangers not keep any records, and not having a global league table.
