Great review it certainly looks like a very interesting game.

BigGameHunter 12-07-2004 23:01:46

Wow...very impressive writing, Mr. KG. I think I might like a game like that...but it's hard for me to play much on my PC...I'd like to see something like that on the console.

protein 12-07-2004 23:17:59

Hey, CG needs more stuff like this.

Good work!

fp@korea 13-07-2004 01:28:51

Excellent review. Well done K_G.

Sounds like a wicked game!

Download a demo - including a multiplayer demo - from here:

if a pacy receiver has run clear of your last man and is haring towards the line - when even the quickest player would not catch them, a well timed fireball can halt their advance in a pinch.
Nope, not a Venom review.

Good job, though.

Chris 13-07-2004 02:00:58

Very nice K_G, if a little lengthy!

Funkodrom 13-07-2004 08:59:00

Anyone know the minimum specs? There's nothing on the website that I could see.

Nav@work 13-07-2004 09:18:58

I have the minimum specs at home. Will post them later tonight.

Funkodrom 13-07-2004 09:29:01

Cool. Thanks.

King_Ghidra 13-07-2004 12:07:38

You can hold nothing on me in that category.

BigGameHunter 13-07-2004 20:59:08

I quit playing MTW after conquering 60% on Easy level.

It lacks something. Fun, but lacking. Like just about every other game/comic/movie/etc. ever made.

Greg W 13-07-2004 22:40:12

BGH. More off-topic than, er, Poly...

BigGameHunter 13-07-2004 23:32:55

Did you hear something? Sounded like "!....sheila...buzzz... hoot...tweet...croc!...bzzz...wahwahwah".

Venom 14-07-2004 01:31:17

He can't remember back more than one post. Brain damage from ingesting too much vegimite.

Greg W 14-07-2004 03:20:30

Hey, veginamite is good for you.

sorry didnt get home till 11.30, then completely forgot. :D

fp@korea 14-07-2004 08:53:36

I've downloaded the demo and will try and get it to run on my laptop tonight.

Beta1 14-07-2004 08:56:02

its pretty low, something like 700mhz.

Anyway its pretty dam good.

I played it for a bit last night and was thinking, its OK but probably no long term appeal. Then looked at the time and realised it was 2am and I had been playing it for 4 hours.

So actually its pretty good, the demo is well done, lets you play 3-4 matches into a league season befor stopping.

Played with the barbarians, not very tactically clever, just lined up my 5 biggest guys across the middle of the pitch and started a massive brawl. Once I had sucked in the opposing forwards I would get one of the quaterbacks (usually played 2) to break off one end of the line and either try and carry the ball forward or get a pass away to a receiver. usually I would have a lineman who had flattened his oppopsite number to shield the ball carrier or pre emptively tackle one of the full backs. Won most games by around 6-1 although the wood elves gave me some problems - their receivers seem very fast and their passing game is quick. In the end I just started matching tacklers up for every player that crossed my line and then ran the ball forward agasint them with my quaters/linesmen.

Not so impressed with the magic bits seems to overcomplicate things and the smoke bombs are just silly.

Love the commentary

Funkodrom 14-07-2004 10:17:29

Cool. I might well download it then.

Nav 14-07-2004 19:23:02

Minimum specs.

Windows 98SE/2000/ME/XP
Pentium 800 Mhz
128 MB RAM
32 MB Nvidia Geforce / ATI Radeon graphics gard
1GB Free Space
DirectX 9.0 compatible Sound Card

Venom 14-07-2004 23:44:20

Not bad at all.

fp@korea 15-07-2004 01:15:34

It works on my laptop apart from the fact that for some reason all the player models are invisible. As is the ball. I can see stuff like the flies flying around the Trolls, but the Troll itself isn't there. Same happens with all the players. I can click on them and stuff, just not actually see them. Arse!

fp@korea 15-07-2004 01:20:30

It could well be because I've not got DirectX 9. Anywhere I can download and install that on a comp that doesn't have internet access? All I can find on the microsoft site is their websetup thingy.

Greg W 15-07-2004 06:48:05

Try here.

Discovered that by typing in and then looking at the links at the top. :p

Or just grab a recent game with DX9 on the CD. Most of em have it.

Funkodrom 15-07-2004 08:04:09

1 Gig free space?! Fuck.

fp@korea 15-07-2004 08:26:24

Time to dump some used-up porno, Mike?

Funkodrom 15-07-2004 08:27:46

I think it's actually music files that's eating up my hard-drive. I could uninstall some games I haven't played for years. :)

That's the websetup one, smartass. :p Note that it's only 10kb in size because it's pretty much just a link to the MS online setup program.

I think that's what I'm gonna have to do. I'll have access to some games like that when I get home next week, I think.

King_Ghidra 19-07-2004 09:21:17

I was looking in PC gamer today and i saw they had given this only 60% in their review.

I have to say it was a pretty weak review. He didn't mention half the features of the game (although obvously didn't have 2000 words to play with like i did).

The reviewer mentioned some of the things i said, like the dfficulty of selecting the players/ball at times, but he seemed to have real issues with it. Which is fair enough i suppose.

He made one point which i forgot to mention which is that the ai of the players is not so good. If you don't give them orders they tend to stand around doing nothing. However, i think the guy missed the point that in order to maintain tactical positions this is sometimes exactly what you want. The game allows you to set individual players aggression radius to varying levels to determine how close opposition players are before they respond, so this is really quite under your control. I think it is a bit of a non-issue.

For some reason they made a big deal out of what i took to be issues with the review code, like some of the unfinished translations that i mentioned. Perhaps this is a big faux pas in the review world...

well either way, that reviewer didn't like it, so as i said before, play the demo first if you're thinking of buying the game

Beta1 19-07-2004 09:32:11

yeah I read that and i didnt seem to match the demo I played which was pretty good.

Also I dont want the other players to run around under AI control. I want the bastards to stay where I put them and hold the line.

Really getting into this now, I espeically like the lightenning bolt blast trick, nice way to create a 2 man overlap. (funny - i tend to play this game like a rugby match)

Le Chuck 01-08-2004 21:56:32

There is also a pretty active online community already, leauges have formed and its quite easy to get a casual game going.
this is a superb game used to play Blood Bowl with a friend, this is really just a real time rip off, but who cares.
cant wait to get the full version :bounce:

I wouldn't worry about it KG, my own experience is that magazine reviews rarely match the scores of my reviews.

Most of these so called 'reviewers' play the demo or the tutorial, and write their review, and that is that.

So many games out there, speed is important.

King_Ghidra 05-08-2004 09:07:58

The PC zone review i saw the other day said 78%, 'a sure-fire cult hit'

chris i hear you, but then i also appreciate that these guys get a lot of stuff, so perhaps if something doesn't seem great straight away they don't waste too much time with it.

I guess partly it goes back to that discussion about reviewing games that you like. I already declared my passion for the kind of game chaos league was, i wonder if someone less interested in the concept would have reviewed it all so glowingly. I like to think they would, but...

Funkodrom 05-08-2004 09:39:47

Well you declared that in the review so at least you gave the reader the context.

Apparently I've won a copy anyway so we can play MP like the old days. ;)

King_Ghidra 05-08-2004 09:57:12

Chris 05-08-2004 10:14:47

The subject matter is a major problem with reviewers, I sometimes have to force myself to play a review game (You know how many freaken 'Tycoon' games there are???)

Sometimes games I looked forward to have blown massive chunks (Pax Romana comes to mind), other times the games are better than I suspected they would be (No man's land for example.)

I decided at some point that I write the review for myself, and just put my feelings about it, and stopped trying to be 'objective,' since you really can't be.

Funko 21-03-2005 11:17:26

OK, now I have this game and have started learning how to play I'm up for some MP action, of course everyone's probably bored of it by now. :)

King_Ghidra 21-03-2005 11:39:15

i'd give you a game, but no decent web access at home

i've been meaning to get back into this for a while now, i wonder if chaos league 2 is in the works at all?

King_Ghidra 21-03-2005 11:40:49

Its time for Sudden Death

The scores are even, the final gong for the match has rung, a winner is needed. Its time for Sudden Death.

Following on from the success of last summers game Chaos League, Digital Jesters' is proud to announce the brand-new expansion pack, Chaos League: Sudden Death.

Chaos League: Sudden Death will feature new races each with their own unique talents as well as over 15 additional hero characters and many more features.

Chaos League: Sudden Death will be due in June 2005.

Funko 21-03-2005 11:43:54

Ah cool. Well when that comes out you'll have web access again.

Funko 23-03-2005 12:18:04

Found out yesterday I'd been playing on rookie! :)

Moved up to amateur, much more of a challenge. Had a go with third division teams Dark Elves against Orks and drew 3-3 but with hideous injuries. Tried a game as dwarves vs goblins but I was really struggling. They are SO slow!

This is currently getting playing preference to both Half Life 2 and Doom 3.

I found one of two things worked:

keep the team in a close line and advance up the pitch destroying everything that comes your way and try and pick up the ball at some point

defend very deep, thus avoiding the threat of someone skipping past your lines who you'll never catch

i scored most of my touchdowns by making breaks into empty spaces after a big melee had knobbled most of the opposition
