R.I.P. Barry White

Not the usual Counterglow music fodder, I know, but Barry White has died aged 58.

Last night I got the After Dark DJ's to play Love's Theme by the Barry White Love Unlimited Orchestra as a tribute to the great man. He was a legend.

Funkodrom 05-07-2003 12:57:26

Yeah. :(

Colon 05-07-2003 13:17:15

Rest in peace...

Darkstar 06-07-2003 05:40:24

Farewell, Spirit of Love. Thanks for the music!

Lazarus and the Gimp 06-07-2003 08:54:26

He was a bit crap though, wasn't he? Let's face facts- he took the sort of thing that the early 70's Marvin Gaye did far, far better, and turned it into a cloying saccharine parody.

protein 06-07-2003 10:09:19

Thank god someone else said it. He wasn't exactly influential. I like a couple of his tracks but once you get over the abnormally deep voice the music isn't very special. I could be proved wrong though.

Debaser@work 06-07-2003 10:22:14

Protien, d/l "Loves theme" by the Love Unlimited Orchestra. They're Barry White's band and the track is a tune Barry White wrote. It was the biggest selling single of 1981 or something. It's cool.

Before he became famous for singing his own songs Barry White was a really in-demand session songwriter and piano player. He's written loads of absolutely classic tunes for other people.

Can't find the bastard. I will when Edonkey finds it.

Scabrous Birdseed 06-07-2003 15:39:10

Just what is the best downloading software for music now that AudioGalaxy is gone? KaZaA sucks, but I've been quite impressed by BearShare whenever I've run it...

Debaser 06-07-2003 15:50:48

I use Limewire because it's one of the only programs to support Macs. Its a bit shit for rare/unpopular stuff, but pretty good for everything else.

Scabrous Birdseed 06-07-2003 16:11:08

Rare stuff is pretty much all I'm after.

Debaser 06-07-2003 16:32:49

Yeah, me too usually.

I think that everything's out there if you look for long enough. I have a hugh list of songs by my computer which I regularly check for. Most things appear in the end.

kazaa does not suck, kazaa fills all my needs

Lazarus and the Gimp 06-07-2003 17:43:09

Surely it would need to suck to do that?

BigGameHunter 06-07-2003 21:53:47

Barry White is often credited with being a huge part (if not THE part) of the start of disco.
Hate disco if you want, but, as in tank development, each stage leads to a better one.

Provost Harrison 07-07-2003 22:49:31

Yep, the walrus of love is dead, gone to the big iceberg in the sky...

No longer Trippin 08-07-2003 05:35:08

And he is probably gonna be pimping every minute he's up there.

Can we please not hijack a thread about the late, great man, with geek talk

protein 08-07-2003 11:33:00

OK then back to the fat-not-quite-as-good-as-gaye-or-brown man. He used to spray his scalp black to give the illusion of hair.

Debaser 08-07-2003 11:35:46

So what? I think you'll find vanity is quite common in [glitter]showbusiness[/glitter]

protein 08-07-2003 11:42:55

Just something I noticed, all I know about him is: 1. a handful of songs that are funny because of his deep voice. 2. He was on the Simpsons. 3. He was fat and sprayed his scalp black to give the illusion of hair.

I still can't seem to get hold of that song.

Debaser 08-07-2003 11:51:58

I'll mail it to you if it's not too big for my crappy email. Shall I use your LoudMedicine account?

Debaser 08-07-2003 11:53:07

Bah, it's miles too big. Did Dan give you that CD?

I think his songs are actually really good if you forget about the deep voice being funny.

Lazarus and the Gimp 08-07-2003 15:53:24

I don't find his voice funny, but I still don't rate the songs much. Too cloying by half.
