Something For Everyone At Reading And Leeds

Metal? Metallica, check. Nu-metal? Linkin Park, System of a Down, check. Immature pop-punk? Blink-182, Sum-41, check. Something for NME to pleasure themselves over? White Stripes, Polyphonic Spree, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, check. Something new for the kids? Good Charlotte, check. "Who chose them to headline?" band? Blur, check. Ode to nostalgia? Courtney Love, check. Now I just need to wait for the Concrete Jungle stage...

In the meantime check out the website or read the BBC news article.

Totally predictable in every way. As usual. Still The White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Courtney, and Metallica will all be quite good.

Where's the World Music tent? How can you have a festival without a World Music tent?

King_Ghidra 08-04-2003 07:52:53

This is commercial music, not weird stuff that people with broad horizons buy.

Have you heard of WOMAD? The entire fucking festival is World Music and it's held at the same site earlier in the year, what more could you ask for?

Scabrous Birdseed 08-04-2003 08:58:30

It's not about the world music, which is usually shit. It's about the atmosphere at the actual festival. I hear Reading/Leeds is full of rich people in mercs who don't want to get dirty and live in fucking posh hotels and shit. Most of whom have one-day tickets and never get remotely grubby.

Funkodrom 08-04-2003 09:02:20

Have you ever been there?

*End Is Forever* 08-04-2003 09:02:55

Of course he hasn't.

Scabrous Birdseed 08-04-2003 09:04:08

:p

It's still not a real festival.

Funkodrom 08-04-2003 09:06:04

As long as we're dealing with opinions he's read in some other music mag and not his own I know how to respond.

Funkodrom 08-04-2003 09:07:19

It's Reading Rock festival anyway, they just dropped the 'rock' bit a while back and now it's the Carling Weekend. It's always been the one festival that was the most Rock orientated. Of course that means less of the hippy vibe. Makes sense.

and the good music?

Scabrous Birdseed 08-04-2003 09:51:36

I've never read anything about Reading in a mag. I just look at the lineup and the history and draw the obvious conclusions.

protein 08-04-2003 09:57:18

You don't go to Reading to see bands you've heard of. You go to get smashed and discover new ones. I'm still not going to pay though.

Scabrous Birdseed 08-04-2003 09:59:24

Hah! That's what you say. It's obviously just a glorified concert where you go see big acts in strictly regimented genre segments.

King_Ghidra 08-04-2003 10:12:42

You havea fairly valid point, but i can only speak for myself and say that i have seen quite a few less famous bands there that i had never seen live and really enjoyed (e.g. parkinsons, ikara colt, moldy peaches).

Although to reiterate Protein's point mainly i'm there to get wasted and have a laugh. One year i only saw five bands the enitre weekend, but it was still a fabulous festival.

Funkodrom 08-04-2003 10:16:13

There are always loads of good bands in the tents and stuff, main stage headliners mean little.
