View Full Version : LWP4

Damn you Laz. Now you've got me thinking of what I'd want to include on the next one.

Does anyone have any ideas for what it should be and how and when it should top this one? :) Personally, based on my LWP3 experiences, I'd suggest we rotate the task of compiling reviews into articles if we're going to do it en masse. I'm willing to do compilation/distribution of the CDs again, but not the review compilation- this last one wasn't so bad, but 4 and 5 really dragged.

Does anyone have any ideas for removing even more prejudice? :D

I'd be happy to do it, but I'm notoriously inept with technology. The results could be bizarre.

Provost Harrison
02-01-2003, 22:49:34
Yeah, sounds fun, but don't ask me to do anything, you know, that requires effort ;)

Well we should see this one out first and then turn our attentions to LWP4...

Scabrous Birdseed
02-01-2003, 22:51:32
It'll be "seen out" in a matter of days, so it doesn't really matter, the next one won't get off the ground for months anyway judging from this one.

Provost Harrison

Hehe, very true. Well I am up for it. Time to start browsing through my collection for horrors for you all to hate :D

Mr. Bas

I'm willing to annoy you with my appalling taste in music in LWP4, I'm not really up for organization though. I've got, err, other things to do... :cute:

And frankly, if I did it it would become a rather chaotic business. In the best case scenario, that is.

Sean

I guess I could give it a shot. One of the problems with the prejudice is knowing who else is taking part, but there is no way around that.

in all seriousness, what is the point?

to let CG friends hear cool music
or to prove how cool/knowledgeable about music we all are?

i'm all for recomendations, but why not just post them rather than compile cds and write reviews?

when i hear something i like i write a thread about in the music forum and see what happens

this LWP thing made sense when it was jst funko and snappy sorting out some musical differences but now...
it's like smash hits 2003

Don't you realise that forcing people to review your merest whim and in turn being forced to review theirs is the perfect conduit for the whole spectrum of human emotion?

Joy - The person I wanted to like this record likes this record!

Anger - Who put this shit on? Why do I have to listen to it?

Self-Destructive Nihilism - No-one will like this! Bwahahaha!

Paranoia - I like this, have I said in the past I didn't like this sort of thing? Did they put it on just to fuck with me? :nervous:

Smug Self-Satisfaction - Heh heh heh, witty formulation.

Existential Angst - Everyone has a different perspective on this song- is there no hope for human understanding?

Provost Harrison

All of those except 'joy' I think fits LWP3...how many people actually liked other people's songs...:D

Everybody except you. You just wrote "I neither like or dislike this" to every record that wasn't emo (which you slagged off).

Because 80% of the internet is people recommending music to other people who won't download it, let alone listen to it a few times and give feedback.

Er.... I was being sarcastic when I said that.

I'm currently making you a CD for your birthday so you better watch what you say buddy! It's currently very ROCK \oo/ but that could change.

Very soon it's going to become the Twee est thing ever.

It needs a gimic.

Scabrous Birdseed
04-01-2003, 10:46:37

More CDs, less tracks :bounce:.

A song over 5 minutes?! What kind of concentration span do you think I have!! :p

*End Is Forever*
04-01-2003, 19:26:42
So we'd have a long song and a short song only, or we'd just have to include a long and short song amongst our alloted time?

Scabrous Birdseed
04-01-2003, 19:29:08
Probably the latter. Otherwise people are going to put on 28-minute epics.

*End Is Forever*
04-01-2003, 19:33:44
Yes. I'm considering putting on four tracks with a combined length of two minutes, just to annoy everyone...

Scabrous Birdseed
04-01-2003, 19:37:29
I'm considering putting on a 2-second track.

All!

Lazarus and the Gimp
04-01-2003, 20:25:52
I suggest you don't. The review process will become a waste of time.

Scabrous Birdseed
04-01-2003, 22:00:59
I won't. It's a very nice song though, with a very deep line of lyrics compressed into inaudibility.

I will put on a 25-second song though, but only to show that songs under half a minute in length can have more substance than that last track on LWP3.

Mr. Bas
04-01-2003, 23:55:45
The 2 second song would be Napalm Death, I presume?

I suggest just dividing up the available time among the participants, and require that at least one < 2 min song and one > 5 min song is included. Or something like that.

Sean

I thought that was the point .

Debaser
05-01-2003, 01:50:13
I think a theme based around song length is just asking for trouble. Who wants to listen to one 15 minute song, let alone a whole double album of them?

Wouldn't it be better to have a proper theme for LWP4, something like everyone having to submit two songs, one a ballad/love song, the other a really nasty spiteful hate anthem. We could then work out set criteria to mark them against.

Sean
05-01-2003, 02:00:12
Rate them on a good-bad scale and a love-hate scale.

Or we could do songs released in a certain decade. Or songs by artists whose (second) name begins with a vowel. Or songs that belonged on soundtracks, but weren’t—also pick a film.

Debaser
05-01-2003, 02:01:59
Exactly, pretty much anything would be better than length.

Pick a film? Buffalo 66.

Sean
05-01-2003, 02:03:06
I meant to go with the…ah, I see what you did there. Most cunning.

Lazarus and the Gimp
05-01-2003, 08:55:38
A crucial criteria would be to only include songs that you think are great.

Personally, I'd like to see a compilation of songs that really, really mean something to you. That big break-up song, or the one you used to play as the soundtrack to your angst attacks. It'll be more entertaining when you're told that they're shit.

Lazarus and the Gimp
05-01-2003, 08:57:08
How about CD's themed on an emotion? Happiness, depression, aggression...

Scabrous Birdseed
05-01-2003, 10:25:56
I'm willing to do "songs that really meant something to you once". Provided you can stomach at least one swedish-language song.

Lazarus and the Gimp
05-01-2003, 19:36:38
No problem. I daresay some of mine would be quite well-known. The fun would be in trying to work out who the hell this might mean something deep to, and why.

Scabrous Birdseed
05-01-2003, 20:13:00
The problem is (at least from my perspective) that there will be an astounding lack of variety in the picks. They'll all be happy or sad love songs, none of them will be very upbeat, and they'll all feature male singers, for instance.

Lazarus and the Gimp
05-01-2003, 20:37:35
I think that's a matter strictly between you and your lack of imagination. Who said it had to be love songs?

Scabrous Birdseed
05-01-2003, 20:48:06
No-one, I just think the trend will be apparent when we're talking songs that you're actually emotionally involved with. I mean, there are loads of great songs that I really like the feel of, but that's not quite the same thing, is it? I can't help having been a soppy bastard in my late teens and having been pretty much dry since then. :(

Of course, I could put on songs that really got me into a certain type of music or whatever, or songs that really got me thnking about what music should be like. But I'm not sure that would really be the point.

Provost Harrison
05-01-2003, 22:56:11

It could be the point. If it means that much to you that you feel the song is genuinely special, then it's on the CD as far as I'm concerned. I doubt anyone's going to be a rule nazi on the issue.

Just any random theme or within certain constraints? What if I choose songs on the theme of "Did America fake the moon landings?", it would be impossible to guess.

Also this guessing idea implies people would have to put thought into it (both picking tunes and the guessing bit). Is this really likely to happen?

I think it's a good idea in principle, but I doubt it would work in real life.
